Top Gear: Land Cruiser vs Defender, G-Class & Grenadier
Until I see some Aussie putting it thru it's paces in the outback, I won't think of it as a truly off-road capable vehicle. For some mad reason (or maybe it's just a fond misbelief), I love what the Australians do with their offroad vehicles. From modifications to overlanding to actually using: it is the test ground. Most of these videos are folks in the states or UK. NOT a viable test nor real-life adaptations yet imo. Let some Aussie beat it around on a beach and going on a overland trip. Video that for me and I'll have a better arm-chair assessment of the Grenadier.
Personally, I think I missed a bullet. The waiting list opened on 2/8 and I jumped on the next day, 2/9. After waiting for years, I finally got a call out of the blue from a Sales Guy saying my time had come. Well, its time had passed. The week earlier I had JUST bought a new house and was not about to buy a new vehicle a week later. So, I passed. Since then, I've seen them, been in them, driven a friend's, etc. I may complain about some of the glitches of my Defender, but it's just a pass for me as uncomfortable. LOVE the looks & the style. I just don't hard core off-road as much as I want to support having a dedicated beast to it. If I had that fancy, I would totally trick out a jeep and tow it to the trailhead.

(still had road tyres, rear end slid into a ditch and had to be dragged out by the front wheels)
Those are beautiful pics! Though, I have to admit, in my fantasy vision of an Aussie off-road I was expecting more mods (Mad Max?) and less 22" wheels. Proves that no matter what the haters say, it's still a VERY capable vehicle in stock condition.
I'm not a 4x4 driver but I noticed that with the air suspension raised for off-road travel, there is not much wheel travel in the defender compared to the others with fixed axles. Maybe they should fix this so one wheel is not up in the air?
Air suspension has significantly more axle articulation than the standard coil springs. 19.7" of travel vs about 10" of travel. Also, it doesn't really matter if a wheel is off the ground, because the traction control will always keep the car moving as long as at least one wheel has enough grip.
So make it a live axle vehicle? I'm not following your logic here..
Honestly, I found it funny that they dinged the Defender on clearance (approach, departure, and break-over) when it’s better (has more) than at least the land cruiser in the competition. I didn’t look the others up to compare (grenedier or g wagon).
any issues they had were 100% driver and line selection. But, they would know that if they bothered to check the spec sheets. Maybe the intent was just to drive views through controversy.
im sure the defender tires were the GY Wranglers. For the recorded, those tires sidewalls suck and no one should be surprised at the puncture.
