Yeah I see a number of them but I found it.

It seems like a good guide.

Took delivery of our defender yesterday (110 SE 5seats). I was a little alarmed at the stated payload capacity of 825lbs. So then I took it to the cat scales to weigh it, expecting the weight of the truck (+me) to be over 6000lbs given the stated GVWR (6975lbs). However it weighed in at 5740lbs, inc me and a 2/3 full tank of gas.

So maybe I'm incorrect, but I though the payload capacity was GVWR - curb weight, which is quite a bit more than 825lbs even if tongue weight of 330lbs is taken off of the GVWR and my own weight is taken off of the curb weight. Or am I wrong in that assumption?

Cheers
Jonathan

You're right it seems wonky like they've built in more capacity (according to the GVWR) then they are telling you on the tire and capacity sticker.

Here's a swag:

What if listed curb weight is dry - no fluids. With just a 23.8 g fuel tank you need to add ~140# just for fuel, maybe closer to 200# total with all fluids.

5034 curb dry200 fluids
825 cargo/passengers
330 free tongue weight
Crap that's only 6389#

Then again you weighed it in at
5740 (but that includes you what 180-200#ish)
plus it could have more gasSay then only 625# additional cargo/passengers330# few tongue weight
Is 6695# maybe low 6700#'s with more fuel.

That's reasonably close to the stated 6975# GVWR
(It's closer the smaller you are).

Maybe they simply have a couple hundred # of safety in the GVWR spec to account for student options/accessories not installed on yours but that could be?!?

Yea, I wonder if the 825 is a standard sticker, as I saw another person post with the exact same cargo capacity of 825lbs. After weighing on the cat scales I’m of the opinion it’s actually around 1000lbs plus the tongue. 825lbs is a family of 4 and 2 backpacking backpacks.

Attached the cat scales receipt

I think, the cargo capacity is assuming a 771lbs tongue weight, which is the max it is designed for. With that in mind the numbers add up a bit better

But doesn't the OM say to reduce cargo capacity for each # over the free 330# tongue weight? So that wouldn't change the sum, it would just move it around the addends.

yea, it does. The numbers just don’t add up, unless like the previous poster mentioned, they’ve built in 200-300lbs worth of safety, but that’s a lot of weight

I got to the bottom of this (thanks to a new defender facebook group member). That door sticker that shows 825lbs, is taking into account the max roof cargo (290lbs I think) and the max tongue weight (770lbs I think). So in reality, the cargo capacity is much higher than 825lbs assuming you aren't towing a massive trailer with the roof fully loaded.
