I personally really don't care what celebrities' drive or wear but I guess for some people it's important.

i think the actual effect famous people owning a car on sales is less that people want to copy a celebrity and more about marketing to non-car people. TV ads are very easy to ignore, and most car people already know all about the Defender, but i’ll bet there are huge numbers of people who first really notice a car when a favorite celebrity gets into one.

One of our businesses is a national brand that was grown almost entirely on Insta and word-of-mouth. We'd be clipping along doing better every month and then suddenly a big IG account would like or comment on our posts and we're instantly swamped with new customers and bigger orders. Repeat, repeat, I had to turn order alerts off on my phone because I'd never sleep anymore.

Every realistic expectation you had is blown away when this happens.

The knock-on effect is also very real. Our original buyers who might have been loyal and consistent are suddenly tagging us, posting the brand, and interacting with our posts. They were happy to begin with but now they feel like we're more legitimate and more worthy of public acknowledgement. They kinda trusted their own decision but they are fully validated by these people with the big accounts.

People have no idea how much of a herd mentality really exists. None.

That's for sure. I have certainly learned something. I get the 14 yo daughter bothering Mom for Kylie Jenner's lip gloss. I just am shocked that actual adults care that she bought a Ferrari or Justin Bieber got a Defender. I can't think of anything that I have purchased (especially a big ticket item) because some celebrity bought it. Guess I'm not with pop culture.
