Where and how to mount a phone in view?
Has anyone found a perfect way to mount a phone? The car's own charger makes my phone brutally hot, and it's inaccessible in that position.
But when I look at the dash, I see that the vents are up high and almost horizontal, making a vent mount look unworkable. I definitely don't want to tape or glue anything down, and glass mounts are illegal in my state.
If you have a product you can recommend, let me know. (My strong preference would be for an iPhone-specific magnetic charger mount.)
Thank you!

There a few mounts in this section of PowerFulUKs website (and elsewhere I'm sure) that spark some ideas. I've generally had (knock on wood) with our 2023 Model Year 110x with it not feeling uncomfortably hot, but sometime warm, when lifted out of the built in charging pad. However there appear to be nuances to that depending on MYr of Def, brand, year of phone and with and without case so definitely nice to have to options.
Thanks for the tip on Powerfuluk's offerings. That looks like it could work.
I have a 3D printer, and I had already been looking at some way to make a mount. There's weirdly few places or ways that looked like it could work, but I hadn't thought of the side of the screen! How hard could it be to make my own? Haha, pretty annoyingly hard, probably!
For those also looking: I think a mount that goes in a cup-holder could be workable too.
Thanks again.

There are also Ram Type ball options with various attachments that may be more convenient. But there may be additional options on these pages too that go over top plate air this one more consistent with a cupholder style. I'm sure there have to be other options out there.
Ah, yes, a crude "ram" type as you showed was my main idea for a 3D printed solution. But, oh no, I wouldn't want to mar my few-day-old Windsor leather dash covering!
The center-console type may likely suffer from the same charger-heating problem. I think phones these days expect finely-centered charging coils and suffer when they are sat off-center, or if the coils are not the right size, etc.
I haven't liked any of the cup-holder-style mounts I've seen. So now I'm thinking about 3D printing something for lower down in the console area. But if I valued my time, I'd be way smarter to simply buy something like that screen-side holder!
Thanks for all the ideas!

If you have the smaller screen, this is ideal.

The phone is visible - works well for Waze or other navigation apps on CarPlay. The main screen shows the map; the phone shows turn-by-turn directions.
And the charger is an Apple MagSafe charger (you have to buy it separately), which means it actually charges your phone without overheating it.

I use the ProClip mount (with one of their magnetic iPhone holders). Recommended by someone at the dealership that does a lot of off-roading. Works well for me.

Totally on board with your way of thinking. Today there is very little need to take your eyes off the road to perform nearly every task, so the issue of where to mount a phone seems moot. Even in the most basic vehicle all it takes is a voice command to send a text, initiate a call, put an appointment on your calendar, search for a restaurant, gas station, etc. Now in our Defenders, with Siri, Alexa, Google, anyone can do nearly any task by voice. Most days I don’t even take my phone out of my pocket; once it is recognized by Pivi I can scroll through my music library, check my voicemail, texts, calendar, all without taking my eyes off the road. I love the fact that as soon as I start my Defender, my iPhone connects with Pivi and I can access all aspects and features of my device without taking my hands off the wheel. Being able to change the ventilation fan speed or temp on the AC/heater or volume UP/DOWN, among many more abilities is what these vehicles have enabled us to do. I wonder what percentage of Defender owners take advantage of these features. The technology exists, just have to use it.
Have a look at the Defender 3D site, they have a selection of products that might solve your problem:
