I think Powerfuluk's offering that mounts to the side of the display is the most elegant solution, and I will get one of those - thank you!

Responding to the "just use CarPlay" comments above: Yes, sure, as a first-time user of that I'm still figuring out what I can do with it. It's a revelation to just say "take me to X" or "Call Y" or reply with a text by voice and have it actually work. Anyway, I still also want a charger mount that doesn't practically set my phone on fire!

Thanks again.

You have to lock the car with the key fob to get it to release your phone. If you use the button on your phone screen to switch to “speaker” or “phone” away from CarPlay, the car is likely to take the phone over again. That happens to me more often than I care to admit.

Ah, thank you for that tip! The car holding onto my phone was driving me a bit batty and the manual didn't seem to be any help.

Most days I don’t even take my phone out of my pocket; once it is recognized by Pivi I can scroll through my music library, check my voicemail, texts, calendar, all without taking my eyes off the road. I love the fact that as soon as I start my Defender, my iPhone connects with Pivi and I can access all aspects and features of my device without taking my hands off the wheel. Being able to change the ventilation fan speed or temp on the AC/heater or volume UP/DOWN, among many more abilities is what these vehicles have enabled us to do. I wonder what percentage of Defender owners take advantage of these features. The technology exists, just have to use it.
Maybe I'm missing something, but how do we change fan speed other than rotary dial?

In the screen there’s a climate control option that you can use to modify settings via the touch screen

Now if only there was an option for one rotary to control the global temperature setting and the other to always and only control the fan. Modes (push a button to select whether it's temp or fans) are almost always worse than single-function controls, and "dual zone" climate control in the small space of a car is a bit of a gimmick. But I guess that ship has sailed long ago.

There is a complete list of Voice Commands that control numerous features in the Defender. There is even a tutorial describing the various Voice Commands and how to use them. Never fails to surprise me how little some owners know about the built-in features of our technologically advanced Defenders. There are various sources of this information, one being the actual Owners Manual, others are discussed and demonstrated on YouTube or PowerfulUK’s video series. These pictures detail some of the available features which allow one to control many aspects of our Defenders with a thumb press on the Voice activation button on the steering wheel. All comes down to learning the intricacies of our vehicles, and best advice is: Read the manual. Like the commercial says, ‘Try it, you’ll like it’.

I think a lot of us are kind of sick of "technology for the sake of technology." I know I am, and I'm a freaking engineer who designs the stuff! Please, no more menus to scroll through, no more voice commands that often seem to just result in "pardon?," no more having to read a 600 page manual. Just give me a few simple, direct, tactile controls as if they are straight from the 1950's and skip all the fancy tech stuff. That worked just fine in my old-school Defender, right? But our cars are now more like computers on wheels designed more to sneakily spy on us or sell us services than just letting us use it in peace. I couldn't even figure out how to turn the car off fully so I could get my phone back, even, and yes I did look in the manual!

Those darned clouds in the sky must be yelled at! (But I am getting to know CarPlay a bit, anyway.)
