Default Worn Tires

Has anyone encountered worn tires at low mileage? I have 2022 110 P400 that came with Pirelli Scorpion 255/60 R20, purchased June 2021. I went to Discount Tires for second tire rotation and balance earlier this week and was told all four tires are worn at only 13,000. How is this possible? I have owned BMW X5 with sport tires and various other vehicles over years and never have I had this issue so soon. I actually drive Defender less than my other vehicles.

That seems a bit quick. There should be a warranty from Pirelli, have you looked into that yet?

Seems way too soon unless they were overinflated or something, as the Defender is known to arrive too high at like 52psi. With that being said I despise the Scorpions, have plenty of personal experience with them from Audi etc. Even a recent loaner, disco sport had them and OMG the road noise was twice as loud as my all terrains. I'm sure there are worse tires but there have to be a whole lot better. Even if they'll replace them for free I wouldn't want another set tbh.

I checked with LR Customer Service and was told the one year warranty on tires expired on my 1 year anniversary in June and no other warranty from manufacturer exist for the tires. I’m waiting to hear back from dealership.

I’m not familiar yet with the defender tire life but every other Land Rover I’ve owned (previous gens), all tires were spent at around 13,000 miles. My defender currently has around 7,000 miles on it so will eventually see. Hope this helps a little.

I’m a little skeptical here. ‘Worn’ at 13,000 miles? What is that diagnosis based on? Every tire is worn as soon as you start driving the vehicle. Are they claiming they are ‘worn out’? Needing immediate replacement? Remember, they sell tires to the unsuspecting general public. Last time I was at a local tire chain, while waiting for a repair I heard a litany of up selling, usually to women who when the salesman began his pitch about needing a four wheel balance and alignment after a brake job, and explaining that it was ‘important’ for the ‘safety’ of the vehicle, would then get the nod to do it. A female friend gets snookered like that every time she takes her car to the dealer for an oil change. She ends up coming home with new brakes, or a transmission flush for $700. In nearly 50 years of driving, and owning dozens of cars, I’ve never flushed a transmission, as I’ve explained to her. They also sold her on nitrogen fills for her tires, which is totally meaningless for passenger cars. Beware the sales pitch, they receive a commission for extra work being ordered.

Any pics of the remaining tread depth? Did the tire shop give you their measurements.

I'm skeptical of all 4 tires being ready for the big tire-fire in the sky. Sounds highly improbable but seeing is believing.

Here's a thought... Why are you rotating the tires? And rebalancing them twice by this mileage? Were they vibrating? If so, yes...do it. if not, I think it's a time waster and doing not much more than providing the Discount Tire shop an opportunity to sell you, the customer, tires.

It's not unheard of to wear out Pirellis on RR/LR in 13K miles btw. Did it in 9K on my old RRS SC V8. Also a heavy fast(er) car.

I'm a bit of a crazy car person and every time a tire shop removes wheels they ding something etc. It drives me crazy to see a wheel dinged by an air tool skittering across the face of the wheel by a careless tech. Preventable and not what I'd call normal wear and tear, even though that's what it becomes when it happens. So with all your frequent rotations I'd bet instead of catching potential safety problems in fact you're just causing minor wheel damages. My new tire model (for all of my 7 cars) is a mobile guy, who shows up like an F1 pit crew in a sweet truck, uses air jacks and does it with zero damage in my driveway. Also it costs no more than going to a tire store. I think these guys/companies are starting to pop up around the country or at least in major markets. https://www.honeybeetire.com. He pulls the tires off, which gives you an opportunity to look at them and evaluate whether rotation etc is needed, and he's a Tire Rack drop ship installer so you can order tires direct to him and not have them come to the house. Anyways, this has been a game changer for how I view tire maintenance.

I know you're probably trying to be a good / thorough / diligent owner by properly rotating tires at a regular interval... but...
