Suggestions on Airing Down Tires
Does anyone know or have a preference as to what PSI they run their tires when off-roading?
I'm assuming that for my tires, the OE "off-road tire" option, that I should lower them from their ~ 50PSI down to about 30-35. If it helps I have a 110 P400 and am planning to do light to medium off-roading to get to camp and fishing spots up here in the Rockies, think around Leadville and Aspen Colorado if anyone is familiar.

Especially if you have 20", that's about as low as you want to go in my experience, unless you are driving on soft sand dunes, in which case you may want to deflate them a lot more than that. I never felt the need to air down to anything less than 32-33 with my 19" Duratracs, and especially with the lower profile and tender "reputation" of the 20" Adventures, which are perfectly fine tires for most light off-roading otherwise, you want to minimize the chances of pinching and slashing a bulging sidewall against a sharp rock by deflating them too much. The 47-50 PSI recommendation for on-road is intended for a fully loaded vehicle, by the way. If you will be driving solo or with just a couple of passengers and little or no cargo (and don't tow anything heavy) on a regular basis, you will be a lot more comfortable airing down to the "Light Load" setting as indicated in your owner's manual, changing the TPMS sensitivity accordingly.

I went up to a lake today in the light load PSI because I didn’t bring my compressor, mostly because it was kind of spur of the moment, and it went well enough. I’m sure dropping them a little lower might have eased the lingering hesitation I had in going over certain rocky segments, spots that have popped tires in other cars I’ve been in before. But the defender has got so much torque, and the locking diffs, and the ability to raise the air suspension, that the whole mini adventure was a breeze.
