LR3 heading down
Once we were finished up top it was time to head down to Carpenter lake and the night of camping, this took us through a protected area where any vehicle travel off the established tracks was forbidden. During this stretch the Disco 1 with overheating issue started acting up again, but only under load. The driver does not have a lot of experience dealing with vehicle difficulties outside of an urban environment, or managingthe vehicle to mitigate this kind of issue. As the guy at the back he was my responsibility to look after. For those you are not familiar that is part of what the tail end guy does. Once we were trending down hill and the load was off the engine the gauge went back to normal, no he does not have an aftermarket temp gauge. The track had a lot and I mean a lot of crisscross roots but was generally good until the descent to Mud lakes.

Most of the trail to "V Gulley" was like this, very pretty and not too hot.

Queued up for the downhill

As you can tell this part of the road sees a lot of run off

Hopefully the next 2 give you an idea of how steep this is, and narrow this

Bjorn, the young fellow who did the guiding, he did an outstanding job. When people paid attention

The rest of day 3 was calm and peaceful other than a portion of the road around mud lakes that was underwater and a tad deep. Over my steps at one point, for about 20 yds.

Lunch stop

Mud at the bottom of the "V Gulley"

After the mud hole and 2 creek crossings we had a nice stretch of road. The creek is off the right.

Lunch stop, we are on track here and the breeze kept the bugs off.

Heading off to to lake

This is the road not a creek, signs of things to come

Trundling through the shallows the road there is just a tad wider than a Disco 2 with 20 drop into the lake if mess up. Fortunately Reed and Cat tails mark the edge.

The remainder of the trip to the campsite hit good FSR's as there are some cabins and lodges on Tyaughton Lake, also known as Tyax Lake

Thus ends Day 3, a good day with a bit of excitement and only one real issue. I will finish up day 4 shortly.

@whowa004 Glad you have enjoyed it so far

Day 4 there are few pictures for this day but I will post what I have, it started off well we left the campsite on time and headed for the "town" of Gold Bridge, this was about a 30 minute hi way drive. We all got there in good shape, there is an unattended gas pump which confused every one. The pump requests a trainee number, what that means is to hit enter and go through a brief on screen safety review, but it took us 20 minutes to figure that out, us V8's need a bit a fuel. The gentlemen with the Power steering leak bought a the ATF they had, 10 liters of misc brands, he drives a series truck. After that we all headed up the road to Bralorne an old mining town, this is a long paved hill quite steep. 10 minutes a huge cloud of stem out of the Disco 1 that had cooling issues, 2 of us pulled over and took a look and it appeared that everything was ok. As he had limited water I drive back to Gold Bridge and purchased 3 gallons of Anti freeze - at a terrible price and then went backup.

When topping up we found that the entire outside edge of his expansion tank had blown out at the seam, close to 40% was shot - and no duct tape will not fix it . After some discussion the rest of the group went to Bralorne, while I escorted the down Disco back to Gold Bridge. The intent was for him to call a tow truck to the next sizable town and get his cooling system sorted out, as it turned out he has no BCAA, road side assistance. He located a local fix guy and we went to speak to him, once I explained the situation to the fix fellow, he suggested the same as I had getting a tow to Lillooet. I will note the fix it fellow had just been about the get in the shower and was assisting while in his bathrobe, he made numerous phone calls on the Disco drivers behalf over about 45 minutes. It turned out the tow was going to be 400.00.

While those 2 were dealing with that I keep the group updated. When the reached Bralorne they spotted a Disco sitting in a yard, they spent a good hour trying to locate the owner. This took a good 45 minutes and they were not successful in locating the owner but they did manage to get a metal Ford F350 tank. As we had now hit 1:30 or so with some hours of drive left a portion of the group headed out to Pemberton and the hi way vai the Hurley pass. I dug into the Disco and took the original tank out so we would be ready to install the Ford tank, it can be made to fit in there and held in place by Zip ties, and some fuel line to replace a hose and create U to block off two extra lines fortunately all suppliedd by other drivers. We got the tank in, I paid the fix fellow for his time and use of his phone (60.00) seem pretty fair and reasonable to me the owner of the Disco one had limited cash on hand and I always carry a couple of hundred in my emergency fund.

Once the tank was in we tried to convient the Disco owner to drive to Lillooet, he said he was not comfortable doing this. Now that road is paved and although not heavily traveled has traffic on it, it is about 60 miles of largely flat going no significant hills. As his disco had no issue under load we saw no reason why he could not do so. In the event he tried to follow us over the Hurley Pass not more than 15 minute out of town on the 1st hill he overheated. We spend some time tightening up the rubber on the rad cap as it was not in great shape. Once this was done yet another discussion was had and we sent him off to Lillooet solo, with simple instructions to pullover if the temp gauge moved and wait until the truck cooled then continue on. He made it with no major issues but that is all I have heard.

Before you all think we are heartless bastards for letting him go solo we had simply run out of time we were 4 hours out of Vancouver + another 2 to get home and it was just after 2:30 ish. Most us had work the next day so we did not have time to go to Lillooet then mess about getting him sorted out a rad shop, drive him home and then get home, for me at least that would have put me home well past 11:00. For some reason he had no one he felt comfortable to calling to pick him up. He is a teacher and no working so an extra day or two while inconvenient is not the end of the world.

Once over the Hurley and fueled up I hit the hi-way and man did my Disco run sweet, tons of power and hummed along beautifully apparently driving at around 2000 to 2600 rpm in low range for hours at at a time clears the carbon right out. Traffic through Vancouver was a nightmare, but I dodged most of it, by using alternate routes. I rolled into home at 8:03 and was unpacked by 9:00. The disco showed 380 Km to reach just above 1/4 tank which is great gas mileage for my truck.

For me at least it was a great trip with good people.

Final comments, when I got home I discovered a few issues :
  1. New oil leak at the bellhousing. It could be value cover or rear main, it is very small less than a tablespoon after 3 hours of driving in testing. Further testing and investigation on going
  2. My oil drain plug came loose - literally hand tight when I got home needs a new crush washer
  3. PCV oil seperator was plugged for a 3rd of it's length but I have done the mod now - new oil leak moved that to a priority
  4. My passenger side engine mount failed, it was iffy before the trip, - and the drive side that looked perfect was also shot no biggy about 1.5 hours to switch them up
And other than needing wash, cut polish and wax to cleanup the brush marks everything else is good, the Disco as per usual performed well and gave me no troubles.

I really need to do the PCV mod, just a feeling mine is in terrible shape.

@whowa004 If you take a look in the PCV mod thread at the end you will see the state of mine, the 04's are bitch to get out, you need to pull the entire little Tube out. A very worth while making the effort to get it done mod though.

Awesome report. Looking forward to watching the videos at work tomorrow, here, would probably take a few months longer than my life to load. Great trip Richard, and way to go mounting up that reservior for the Dl guy. Field repairs are whatever get you moving again.

Really appreciate you sharing this with us. Believe me, l know it was no easy task to collect and post all of those pictures.

And...so when is the next great adventure?

Brian.
