I saw these two types of driving lights... the Hella 500 and 500FF (for "free form" apparently) for sale at WalMart the other day and thought they would make a good addition to my Disco... but they were the same price and I couldn't tell which was better.

What is the difference between the standard and the "free form" driving lights?

 

the standard 500 directs the light with the lens while the free form does it with the reflector.

 

is one better than another?

 

The Hella 500FF provides 20% more light than the Hella 500. So I think 500FF is better. Just my 2 cents
