Fisher Price: My First Disco Mod
One of the first things I noticed when my wife bought her 2001 Disco II was that the rear hydraulic step was rotting out underneath the plastic cap. Probably not a big deal to most of the folks here, but this Disco doesn't see no off-road action and the step is useful to load the kids in the far back in the jump-seats.
I took the entirestep to my buddy who runs a fabrication shop and asked him what he thought the best approach for repairing it would be. He had it for a few days and the next time I seen it, it was sandblasted and the step was cut off...so it was essentially just an ARM with no step!
On Saturday I was down at his shop sandblasting some parts for my kids go-kart and he worked on the step. He took steel-diamond plate and cut it out in the exact shape as the original plastic cap. He took another piece of diamond plate and wrapped it around the front and welded itso it looks pretty close to the original step, except that it's all steel instead of plastic. Additionally, he capped the ends with steel rather than the plastic fillers.
I primed it and shot it with flat black paint. I'll shoot a few pictures of it if anyone is interested. It came out really nice...but honestly, I'm not surprised, my buddy is incredible when it comes to all of that stuff.
