Default Kenwood Excelon Single DIN install with flip up screen, navigation, movies, etc

Hi, I am new to the forum... just thought I pass along some info regarding the head unit install on my Kenwood Excelon unit.

I have a single DIN Kenwood Excelon KVT-696 unit. I also bought a lower trim plate to cover up space at the bottom of the unit (
Amazon.com: Metra 89-9400 DIN Mountable Trim Plate for 1994-2004 Land Rover Discovery Vehicles (Black): Car Electronics

I like this flip up unit as the screen sits higher above the dash. The higher screen allows my kids to watch moves from the rear seats. I bypassed the circuitry so that the movies and navigation data entry will play even when the car is being driven.

The flip up screen can also be adjusted to different tilt angles and distance from the dash.

My unit is rigged to GPS, rear backup, IPOD, USB aux and Bluetooth AD2P. Works great with the stock speakers

The KVT-696 unit is no longr available. An equivalent Kenwood model is the KVT-696:

I got this unit as it offers the Garmin navigation system which I have familiarity with the map interfaces from past stand alone Garmin units.

I used an installer from Craigslist to help me with the install. The installer mentioned his preference for Pioneer systems instead of Kenwood for ease of installation.

I wanted AD2P Bluetooth wireless capability which will allow movies or music to be played wireless from a smartphone or tablet. This unit uses an external Bluetooth module as an add-on option. The Bluetooth module is fairly large and it took some time behind the dash and glovebox to route the wiriing and module placement. I suggest finding the latest headunit modules which offer Bluetooth/AD2P already designed into the main head unit. Here is an example:

Good luck in your search for stereo nirvana!
