Lightbulb Battery Dead - Navigation Screen Stays On

The other day I went outside to take the LR3 for a spin and found my battery dead. I took it to the dealer today and the battery tested fine. They said there was slightly more drain on the battery than Land Rover's specifications so that is a bit strange but through some experimentation, I think I figured out what caused my battery to die.

These are the steps I follow to reproduce the problem (or what I think is the problem) and I'm hoping some other LR3 owners can comment on whether they've seen similar behavior:

1) After I get home, I park the car and lower it to access height.
2) We get everything out of the car (mom, baby, and accessories )
3) Once we're all out, I lock the doors and go inside -- everything is good.
4) Oops, I forgot something in the back so now I go back outside, unlock the car, now the Land Rover logo shows on the navigation screen and the radio is lit up. I then get the stuff out of the back and lock the doors again (using the remote).
5) Here is the problem -- after I lock the car again (without having put the key in the ignition at all), the navigation system stays lit up showing the Land Rover logo and the radio remains lit as well. After walking away for at least 5 minutes and coming back, I find both are still lit up even though I have locked the car and the dome light turns off.

If I unlock the car, turn the key on and then turn it off, the Navigation System turns off immediately and the radio light shuts off after a minute or so. Therefore, I think the Navigation System (and radio to some extent) are draining the battery dead because they never shut off.

Is this normal behavior or am I doing something that Land Rover did not intend by unlocking my car without turning the key on & off?

Update: This is a 2005 LR3 HSE

Thanks for any advice.
- Justin

Pretty normal I believe. I haven't checked mine to see how long it stays on but 5 mins seems about right. I'd look for something else like an accessory not getting shut off, etc. or come back in an hour to see if the screen is still on- then you'll know you have something wrong with it.

More info: I realized that I don't actually need to start and turn off the vehicle to get the navigation screen to shut off. All I need to do is turn the key on and then turn it off again (so don't quite turn it far enough to start it up).

I'm taking it to the LR dealer on the 10th so they can program a new key for me. I'm going to ask them about it then.

Rovin4life, are you saying that my system could be reprogrammed to turn off the navigation when I re-lock my doors?

Just purchased a 07 HSE Friday and found the same thing happening with my Nav Screen. How long does it take to shut off if you do not insert key?

I'm not exactly sure but I've tested it a few times now and it eventually does shut off.

I've had my battery tested multiple times (by different shops) and it tests out fine... still not sure what is causing my problems but something is definitely slowly eating away at my battery charge. After leaving it sit for a day in the cold weather, I sometimes get HDC Fault errors and my mileage meter resets (along with the rest of my trip info). I'll be taking it into the Land Rover dealer at some point soon, I think.

Default Similar Problem

Did any of you guys find a decent solution to this problem? I've got exactly the same thing on an 07 RRS HSE, when you lock it up the nav system, radio and parking brake light remains on - I think just when reopening the car - which seems to drain the battery.

Is there a system reset function you can activate or is it just some sort of design fault?

Any help greatly appreciated!

My navigation unit still stays on for awhile but it will eventually turn off. My HDC fault issues were due to a bad battery. I had the darn thing tested like 3 times and finally, the shop I took it to replaced it under the Interstate warranty and the new battery I got works fine -- no more HDC faults.

Well, another winter has come and almost gone. Last spring I got a new Interstate battery and as soon as the temps started getting cold at night, my battery started dying regularly again.

If I don't drive it for a day and the night is cold, the battery will be dead by morning.

I've taken it to 2 different garages and a car stereo specialist. They said the after-market DVD player does not seem to be the problem but while the vehicle was shut off for 30 minutes, they detected a measurable drain in the battery. Therefore, something is definitely staying powered on when it shouldn't be.

This problem has pissed off my wife and I so much that she's convinced she wants to sell the truck. I haven't been convinced of that yet but I am definitely getting tired of jump starting it once a week (I do hook it up to a battery charger some nights when I predict it's about to die that night).

Does anyone else have this problem? I can't possibly be the only one...

Help!
