Well before I even got to diagnose anything we had a horrific storm blow thru and it took our power out which won't be back until 7:30AM. I was sitting in the house and I thought I heard music....

Well I waited a few minutes and yep sure enough I heard music playing. Went outside and wouldn't you know it was coming from my 99 D2 lol. No key on no thing and boom the stereo is just a jamming out all on it's own!! Gotta love a LR's personality sometimes.

Well I quickly just pulled the fuse for the radio and it went silent. Put it back in and nothing. So I got the key real quick and even after that it wouldn't turn back on. I finally gave the on/off switch a few rapid taps and it came on, but then quickly locked up where nothing worked. My guess is the on/off switch is messed up and it's either making it come on with no key in the ignition after say 30min, or once you get it on/off it then locks up the stereo from working properly. I don't want to wake up to a dead battery so I just pulled the fuse and called it a night.

I'll either grab a used H&K Head Unit from a junk yard or look into replacing it with something a little more modern. At least it has nothing to do with my rear door back panel! Once again sorry to derail this great build thread.

I'll see if I can start up a thread for the 99 D2. It's come a very long way since it sat abandoned for 6 months just over a dead battery & alternator!!

 

Over the weekend I was able to complete our new seats. When I say new I really mean new to us seats. Since we're going to be traveling in this car we wanted to eliminate some of the electrical items in advance. One area of concern were the powered seat, and the potential for the motors to go. I've been looking for D2 manual seats for several months now, and kept coming up with nothing. A couple weeks ago I came across a pair of manual seats on eBay from a seller in Virginia. I arranged to have them shipped to me, and the project began. In addition to the manual seats we wanted to be able to keep the leather, and the heated seats.

Here's what happened.

The seats came in.


They got stripped down to the bare frame.


Next was unbolting the upper seat frame from the lower on the electric seats.


We wanted to keep the armrests too. I had to remove this part from the electrical seats, and weld the bracket on the manual seats. This bracket went in the same location as the manual lumbar ****. So that was removed.



The new manual seat frame back together.


Moving right along to mounting the cushions. The bottom was easy, but the top was a PITA.




I had to remove a mount from under the electric seat, and install it on the manual to be able to hold the fuses. All wires are tucked up nicely, and out of the way.


While the seats were out this was a perfect time to mount our Bull Dog car safe. The safe can be pulled out from the front seat through the old CD changer door.


By time the seats were installed I didn't have enough light to get pictures. I'll try to get some today if it clears up outside.

Let me see if I have this straight.
You have D1 manual seat frames that you welded a D2 armrest support to?
Then you recovered the D1 seat frames with D2 padding/leather?
Then you mounted it in your D2.


How did you attach the D1 seat frames to the D2? Did you customize the D1 mounting brackets? Or did you modify the D1 frame to fit the D2 mounting brackets?

 

I managed to find D2 manual cloth seats out of a 02. I picked them up from Will Tillery, or the person running his parts sales on eBay.

So the frames were exactly the same, and came with different options between the manual and powered versions. They still mounted to the same four mounting points, and all the trim fit as it should as well. I had to modify the upper frames to be able to use the armrests, but that's about it. Drill a couple holes on the upper passenger seat to attach the seat back diaphragm, and a couple holes on the bottom of both for the heated seat electronics.

Now I have to located all the fuses associated with the power seats, and remove those. I'd like to find a way to remove the control from the center, but I don't think they have blanks to fill the openings.

I love that pistol safe! I just carry mine on my 4 o'clock position.

 

I usually don't worry about carrying mine when we're local. Since we're going to be traveling I don't want to take any chances of being pulled over in another state. I figure it's best to have it locked away until it's needed. I'm thinking about adding another one under the drive seat as well.
