Default 1997 Defender 90 Engine

Hello everyone
I am new into Land Rover ownership and have a 97 Defender 90 that needs an engine, my question is, can I use a 3.9L engine that was used until 1995 in my 1997 Defender 90 to replace the 4.0L engine? I can buy a remanufactured 3.9L engine reasonably for the swap. Thank you for helping.

Quick search...not exactly your year or model, but enough info to say there is quite a difference between the 3.9L mechanical distributer and 4.0L OBD electronic.

Doesn't seem to be direct swap, a lot of change over...from what l've read.

What is wrong with your 4.0? Don't know where you are located, but D&D Fabricating, in Almont, Michigan rebuilds land rover engine exclusively.

The only person l know, that may be able to answer your question would be Chris Ray...goes by Mud Ruts on several different boards. Very knowledgeable.

Good luck, wish l had more to offer.
