Hello, this is my first post and I hope it's not obvious how new I am with Land Rovers - Okay, so maybe it's obvious. I'm considering buying an 80s defender with a newer engine. The exterior looks like a 300TDI, but the engine stamping says 12L. What am I missing here?

Correct,

the discovery 200tdi looks somewhat like a 300, but you can usually tell right off from the thermostat housing.
