Default Defender buying advice

Hey All,

I've been looking around for a Defender 110 for quite a while now and recently came across one. I had a question about the engine, as I’ve read very mixed reviews about them. The Defender I’m looking at is a 1989 and has the 2.5 turbo diesel. Is this a desirable engine or should I hold off and try to find one with the 200 or 300tdi? I’m just not as familiar with defender engines and pros/cons of them. Thanks for the help!

Before a purist barks at you.....you are looking at a 110, not a Defender. The Defender name did not come into use until the early 1990's. I have a 2.5td in my 110 and I live at 10k above sea level and it is uphill in every direction. I definitely wish I had a 300tdi, but my 2.5td starts every time and gets me around......slowly. I would guess that if you live in a relatively flat area you may be happier with the 2.5td's performance, but you would still not be able to overtake the faster moving traffic. For me I do not mind enjoying the ride and I usually leave way early anywhere I go so I do not have the feeling of needing to rush and not being able to.

Nothing against 2.5TD but they are not desirable. Earlier engines are more robust if not anemic, and later engines produce better power, are more reliable, and have more parts available.

It's a normal engine that will work fine, but you should pay a lower price than say a car which has a 200 or 300Tdi.
