TD5 Starting Issues
Hello everyone,
I’m having starting issues with my 2003 TD5 Defender 110, and they don’t seem to stem from the usual causes (because I’ve had them in the past).
The car will eventually always start, but varies between firing on the first crank, and on the 5th attempt. It cranks nicely, but just seems to not want to fire. Some key points on it are:
A secondary issue (more bizarre than anything). Often after turning the key to position 2 and waiting for the engine light to go out, when I turn the key further to start absolutely nothing happens. There’s an electronic hum when the key is in the start position, but nothing else and no attempt to crank. The thing is…turn it off and then back on again and it will crank as normal.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

The car will eventually always start, but varies between firing on the first crank, and on the 5th attempt. It cranks nicely, but just seems to not want to fire. Some key points on it are:
- Fuel filter recently replaced, with many many bleed cycles performed. There are no symptoms to indicate air in the fuel system. I’ve had plenty of issues with air in the system in the past, so I’m pretty familiar with the symptoms and am confident that this is not the issue.
- No oil on the ECU.
- Freshly replaced injector harness, and all injectors serviceable (recently had to replace two of them, others had no issues).
- No battery issues.

No not yet, I’m away for work right now, but will most likely try new glow plugs next and see if that makes a difference.
