Default 14CUX injectors won't fire when cranking

Hi folks, I'm hoping there is maybe an expert here that might be able to help me solve a problem that has me stumped. My injectors won't fire while cranking the engine (verified with noid light) but if I squirt some starting fluid in the plenum it fires right up and runs like a dream after.

Something is making the ECU not want to pulse the injectors until it is already running. I have verified all of the sensors per the service manual (minus the road speed transducer, don't have that - see below.), and I get the same thing with 2 different ECUs. No codes show up on Roverguage either, and it doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold. Only thing I can think of is that it isn't getting the right RPM signal from the coil until it is above cranking speed, but I verified 6.8kOhms from the coil (-) to the ECU so not sure how that could be.

Now for the curve-ball....this isn't actually a Rover, its a '46 ****** with a Buick 215 (which GM sold to Rover and it became the Rover V8)) and converted to 14CUX fuel injection (1990-1995 Disco and RRC). I recently did the conversion and it was working perfectly for awhile, then this began and has me completely stumped.

Hope someone here is able to point out something stupid I've overlooked.

Wish I could help, but all I can say is I've experienced similar. Seemingly no rhyme or reason and incredibly frustrating.
Good luck!!!

I'm currently having exactly the same issue as described above by KAR1179 - my Land Rover in question is a 95 Discovery 1. Did you find a fix KAR1179? Thxs, Ian

I never did figure it out. I ended up putting a toggle in to manually fire the injectors prior to cranking to get some fuel in there. Works fine, but wish i didn't have to do so......

ok - thxs for the quick response. I'll continue to work on it and if I find the problem, I'll be sure to share it with you and the forum.

Sounds like a problem discussed on this forum with the crank position sensor (CKP).

I don't have personal experience with the failure, but I replaced mine while it still worked, so I have a known good spare in my trail bag. I did the same with the amplifier module on the distributor and the coil, distributor arm, and cap.

It does behave like it, but they didn't have a crank position sensor until '95 or '96 I believe.

89-95 14CUX = No CPS & 96-99 GEMS/99-04 BOSCH = both have CPS. How is the relay for the injectors? You should have 2 relays (old style had silver metal covers), one for fuel pump & one for fuel injectors. Bosch has a newer revision of those relays with either a black or brown plastic cover. You might not be getting power to the relay correctly.

ETM shows RL19 feeds the injectors. It is called Engine Main Control Relay and lives in the engine compartment fuse box. Both injector power and relay power come through Fuse 37 (20 amp). There is also a Shorting Link 6 on the negative side of the coil. Many engine sensors get power through this relay, including CMP sensor, MAF sensor, and canister purge valve.

Hope this helps.

The relays on mine have been replaced.. It works fine once it starts up, it is just the initial squirt when cranking that doesn't happen. For some reason the ECU doesn't send the signal until the engine fires. I feel like it has something to do with maybe not getting a correct rpm signal from the coil, like the ECU doesn't see high enough rpm to trigger it to pulse the injector (I don't actually know if the ECU needs a specific rpm signal to pulse them, just all I can think of). I've verified the resistor in the line from the coil, and have tried two different ECUs.
