The steel wool packed breather is called a flame trap or flame arrestor. That's for Danny's sake.

Well it sounds like it's oiling ok if the rods are tacky. Solid push rods, oil drips down backside to the lifter socket. The lifters have their own oil drillings. IF the block has a small hairline or chunk missing on the coolant port it can be TIG welded successfully so don't discount the motor as being shot, it is still just a leak, a repairable leak. Anywhere else in the combustion portion it's still not a tosser depending on how bad. I'm assuming the coolant in the oil is just the hg missing a portion from coolant port to #8. I'm crossing my fingers as much as you, I want this to be a success for you.

I appreciate your enthusiasm IH! I'm about to roll up my sleaves and dive back in. Hope to have the heads off before lunch. I'll have photos and a report soon.

The solid push rods threw me for a bit. I've never seen push rods without holes in them (not that I've been this deep in an engine more than a dozen times).

The only concern I have inside so far are the presence of fairly large flakes of black (baked?) oil. It falls apart the moment you try and touch or pick it up. Could be burnt oil or some kind of carbon build-up.

Regarding the gasket kits...I still don't get the $65 difference in the T6 and T7 kits?

Sounds like the oil was rarely changed. Brown and gooey is never a good sign on anything except fudge brownies.

One has a Land Rover ($$$) logo on it.

Also..

The gasket kits come with everything you'll need and more (valve seals).

My rocker area oil looked like soft and crispy brownies too.

Seats can be reupholstered to like new condition. Dash can be held down or replaced.

Thanks Eric. The oil seems a bit overly dark-brown and possibly 'burnt' but there is no sludge buildup like I've seen pictures of in most of these threads. Judging by the general condition of the rig and lack of maint I doubt preventitive maint was very high on the PO's list of priorities.

I did manage to get the driver's side head off with little drama. The head bolts are/were massively tight and really come loose with a 'pop'. I had to use a three foot 'cheater' for added leverage. I'm still working on the aft two head bolts on the passenger side. There's just not quite as much room to work back there but I think I will have it soon. Really I just wanted to keep IH Scout in suspense a bit longer... ;-)

It's working.......I'm a bundle of nerves.

At least you haven't come to one or two that didn't pop......yet.
