Post 1994 Discovery Transfer Case Replacement?

Hello, I just bought a 1994 (5/94) Discovery. The transfer gearbox is cracked and needs to be replaced I am having a hard time finding a used 1994 t-case. The person I bought it from said I could use one off any Discovery up to 1999. He also said the the t-case in it now is off a Defender 90. Lower gear ratio? This is the number off the side of the t-case
28D334601E. And one last thing do the 1994 and the 1995 Discovery use the same Workshop Manual.
Thank you~jason

I think there are some differences, a recent post was looking for an older guide and it was not in the RAVE, but there are other sites to pay for a specific year.. Some of the dismantlers may be of help, and big salvage yards if within driving distance (I sometimes make a day of it and go to one 200 miles away). LKQ near me gets $125 for a transfer case, you pull it, they have over 100 yards in the US. And what about welding the cracked case, if gears, etc. would still be in perfect alignment? Kinda depends on where the boulder bumped the bottom.

Jason,

If you your location in the space provided in the profile, it will appear on all your posts, making it easier to let others know where you are and what you are close to.

I have a nearby yaard that pulls the tranny and t-case as one unit. I do not know specifically if a 94 varies ,but I would think the 95 is interchangable as long as it comes from the same type tranny (auto vs 5 speed). A matched tranny and t-case may be the best combination as they are certain to work together.

There are a few guys on here who own multiple vehicles and they have the experience and knowledge to be able to tell you the compatability or other issues to look out for.

I would suggest you determine the overall condition vs needs of the vehicle. Do a fluids and filters change on everything and start a baseline maintenance program.

There are fewer and fewer early ones around, but they are simpler than the later versions.

Congrats and welcome to the asylum!!!! New patients always welcome!!!!

Hope you enjoy your Discovery.

I mentioned this on LRO but I'll repeat it here. This is especially relevant for people who own early DI's (ie. models that were equipped with the 14CUX EFI system and the 3.9L engine). The transmission coupler, that splined shaft that sticks out the rear of your ZF transmission has significantly shorter splines on those early DI's and ALL RRC's. So, when looking to install a later LT230 from a DI you need to get the transmission coupler off the ZF transmission as well. All later DI's (GEMS equipped 4.0L's) have the longer splined transmission couplers on their ZF transmissions.

It's just one of those little things most, if not all salvage yards won't be privy to but when you sell plenty of LT230 conversion kits you learn the about the small bits.

Another thing I mentioned on the LRO board was that you have to be aware that LT230's from Defenders (lower gearing) with manual transmissions and even DI's with the R380 five speed have slightly different shift linkages. To fit a manual linkage to an auto or vice versa is a bit tricky.

Should you need just the transfer case, I have them in stock for $200 plus shipping by UPS. They come with a 60 day replacement warranty plus all the on line and phone consulting you need to get the part installed correctly.
Cheers,
Paul
