Default 1995 Disco Noise?

I am looking for some advice from the pro's!

My 1995 Disco 1 has developed a distinct 'whine' that seems to be coming from the transmission area. It does stop when the engine is not under load (increasing rpm's or speed)
It only happens after the engine has warmed up. It does it in all gears including neutral, moving or still. It doesn't matter if the transfer is in N or L.
I changed the transmission fluid with no change.
IDEAS?

Thanks

Is it an auto or manual tranny?
Have you performed your 60k service as outlined in the sticky?
Was the tranny low before you changed the fluid? What color was the old fluid?

That could be the tranny pump complaining that you did not change the filter? Also, a drain just gets about half the fluid (because the torque converter does not drain out). Also, since it does it while standing still, consider warming up the truck, then removing the serpantine belt, just to be sure it is not something driven by the belt. You can also listen "thru" a stick held against various spots, and perhaps localize the noise.

Was it making the noise prior to the fluid change?

Is it an auto or manual tranny? Automatic
Have you performed your 60k service as outlined in the sticky? I bought the vehicle with 95k on it 2 years ago - given the previous owners care of the vehicle - I would guess yes?
Was the tranny low before you changed the fluid? What color was the old fluid? No - It started the whine so I changed the fluid

Was it making the noise prior to the fluid change? yes

then removing the serpantine belt, just to be sure it is not something driven by the beltGood idea - I did this and it still made the noise
You can also listen "thru" a stick held against various spots, and perhaps localize the noise. I will do this tomorrow

If old fluid was red, good. If very dark, lots of "dust" from the clutch disks... If smelled like burnt coffee pot, not good. So you did not change the filter?

I always assume the PO never did anything more than oil change, unless documents exist. Now if he was a gear head, he would not have sold it.

So you did not change the filter? No I didn't change the filter - the old fluid was red

The PO traded it in to the dealer for a 2010 model - original owner and the maintenance records are pretty thorough

If it does it in all gears including neutral and transfer case gears, is that an indication? I ma not very good with the drivetrain

Why would the transmission filter cause a whine? It doesn't have moving part?
Above question asked knowing full well ' because it is a LR'

Have you checked the transfer case fluid level?
The gears in the t-case move as long as the engine is running and the transmission is not in park.

A transmission pump can whine (or scream) if filter is blocked and it is not getting enough fluid through it. Of course, that normally changes with rpm and the shift points of the transmission, and would not likely do that at idle.

And Spike has a good point about the transfer case, see this video of one thru the inspection plate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv5EV4wko38. There are some conditions, like applying the brake, that stop it in the video, they move through all gears, and you see it start moving as the engine is cranked up and moved through gears.

And tranny case whine is famous for dropping off when you take your foot off the gas..

You said it does it in all gears, did that include park and brake on?

Also, lots of owners go to a heavier oil (like 85W140) to knock down some of the noise on older transfer cases.

The gears in the t-case move as long as the engine is running and the transmission is not in park. I have not gotten to the transfer case yet - but it makes the whine noise in park as well - does this rule out the transfer casing?

and would not likely do that at idle - it will make the noise at idle after the engine is warmed up but stop when the engine is reved?

Also wanted to say thank you to all that have given help / advice - it is much appreciated
