Default 1996 disco key wont turn

ok guys I took the plunge and bought a disco, i'm new too land rovers. The key in the ignition wont turn and if I violently smash the wheel to the left and the right I can get the key to turn and start the truck ,most of the time. Could it be the ignition itself or something with the columm ? Any help would be great .

if you turn the wheel after the key is removed the cloumn will lock and jamb then when you insert the key next time you need to twist the wheel in the direction it locked to take tension off the tumbler, this is common with most cars of that era and my wife does it since she pulls on the wheel to get in our lifted 98, unless you are having a different issue

Also shoot some graphite powder or in a pinch (NOT ideal) wd-40 into the lock. Mine completely seized up once and made it like new.

All LR's seem to have an awkward push-in-and-turn at just the right angle quirk and eventually you'll get the feel for it. On mine the lubrication definitely made it a lot more forgiving.

Try pushing your key in harder and twist it. Just don't break the key. It happens to me once in awhile it's just a quirk.

Awesome! That stuff is great. I ended up spraying it into every lock on the cars and at home once I discovered it.
