Key wont turn, stuck in park.
I finished my engine swap and got everything running well. This morning my Discovery 2, 2002 left me stranded. After about 20 minutes of arming and disarming the anti theft system I was finally able to get the key to turn and unlock the steering column. After talking to the previous owner it seems this was a pre existing condition. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may cause this? I dont want to end up late for work some morning cause she wont turn over or come out of park..............thanks.........Bret
Additionally, there is a switch that is activated then the brake pedal is pressed. If that switch fails, you cannot get the car out of park at all... $15 part available at the dealer parts counter.
the switch is on the back of the brake pedal assembly i believe, its like a piston on most cars that pushse a switch to let the car know that you are stepping on the brake pedal. i think there are 2 on discos, one to activate the brake lights, and a seperate one to let the car actually know the brakes being depressed. why they have 2 is beyond me, but i remember reading it somewhere haha.
another common thing, usually its the xyz switch I think its called that doesn't register that the shift is all the way in park. trying jiggling it abit and try again, it wont let you start the car or sometimes it will lock the key in the ignition. also rock the steering wheel back and fourth a few inches while turning the key, maybe it thinks its locked over.
