Default 1996 discovery whining

I apologize in advance if this topic has already been solved, but I can't find any info on my problem. My discovery is whining during acceleration (constant whine). It goes away when I let off of the accelerator, but is loudest when I lightly push the accelerator after coasting. I'm going to check the transfer case fluid tomorrow.

Could this be a very serious issue? I've always had this whine since I've owned the truck. The transmission shifts smoothly and the engine is quiet and runs great. This is my first land rover and I love it so far. I'm just not familiar with the common issues. Thanks in advance.

You need to start by checking all of the fluid levels.

Where does the noise sound like it is coming from?

I checked the engine and transmission fluids today. They were fine. I need to check the transfer case fluid still. The whine sounds like its coming from the front of the truck, almost under the center console area.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Transfer case seems to be the culprit. Use a thicker gear oil

This will help a bit - it's likely worn t case or front diff bearings. Gears can make whining noise as well but most of my whining has been fixed with fresh bearings and proper fluid changes

It doesn't sound like a wheel bearing. I just think its strange that it goes away when I let off the accelerator at any speed.

I'll post an update after I change the transfer case fluid.

Check your fan clutch and pulleys just for good measure.
