Default Water pump Gasket Sealer Question

Hi Guys,

Going to be removing a bad water and installing a new pump today -

The question:
Do I need to use a gasket sealer along with the gasket that came with the new pump?

Always appreciate any and all input..

Trav...

I used a very light application with mine. See atached page from RAVE, in typical Roverspeak, it is called a "joint washer", see #5 on drawing.

Isn't that a gasket? So did you just apply sealant with no gasket?

That is why I am asking - I read the RAVE before - the same section - It doesn't mention anything about using a sealer.. and the gasket I have is paper - oil wouldn't work - in my mind at least..

Thin RTV or Hylomar (spray if you can find it). You are holding the gasket in position on a vertical surface for assembly, and it is paper thin (oil just holds it). Can also be done with Oklahoma grade full strength RTV if no gasket around, but gasket is the best way.

I always use a thin layer of ATV, black or grey...

In regards to Hylomar, I recall when that stuff came out. Not too sure if the formulation has changed, but I never had success using it when I rebuilt a few rotary engines, always had issues with curing. The new ATV's and the good'ole Permatex sealant will always do the job....

I would use the gasket only, no sealer.

Same! I didnt use any on my last one IIRC just a little bit of grease to get the gasket tacky enough to stay in place while mounting the new pump. They also sell those single shot t-stat and water pumper sealant packets at most auto parts stores if you go that route.

I used RTV applied thinly with an acid brush when I did my water pump a few months back. Just enough to cover the gasket on both sides.
