1996 New Owner
Just bought a 96' Discovery for snow / rough mountain conditions only. Paid $1900 with 215,000 miles on it. Snowed about 4 ft over Christmas and it plowed through everything. Very happy with it. It's currently at the shop for a new radiator and hoses as it has a pretty nasty oil / coolant leak. The axle is caked in old oil. I've replaced intake manifold gasket & engine cover gasket. It also needs a new brake booster, power steering hoses & trans lines. Altogether, it'll set me back about $2800. Seem steep to any of you? Again, this is not a daily driver and will ultimately become a toy. Did not check for rust just yet. Didn't know that was a thing with these and will check when radiator is done.
Thanks!
Thanks!
The front axle caked in oil could be the pivot ball on each side. If they get rusty, they will never seal. The newer versions are teflon coated to avoid the rust. If the axle pivot ***** get low on oil, it will destroy the upper and lower pivot bearings and the wheels will wobble bad! Also will take out the CV joints and wheel bearings.
Not bad to replace, but they are a bit spendy for all the parts.
