I SHOULD, after 7 mo, get my 1996 D1 SE that I bought for PARTS but it looks like I will probably restore it and put Mutley into service at the Hunting camp.
This unit has 231,125 miles and the engine checked out PERFECT with less than 5# across the cylinders.
1. How much work is putting in a transfer case in.
2. What should I expect to pay for a low miles used one

I paid 200$ for mine unknown mileage. It took me 3 days of sporadic work, and I wasn't equipped with either a lift or a pit.

 

There is no such thing as a low mileage 15 year old t/case, especially a good 96 since they had so much trouble with one of their shaft failing. Rover did do a quick modification to that shaft by drilling a hole thru it so oil would flow, but there are a lot of those old ones out there. Might consider buying a 97 or 98 t/case and have it opened up and inspected, resealed before installing. Also use an 85W/140 gear oil.
What about the rest of the truck, have you done a major service to get it current?

 

It is still sitting in the field where I bought it 7 mos ago. The title has to be gotten from the state as it is a mechanics lean that has been collecting storage for 3 years at $25.00 per day.

What year cases fit this 96? I have access to a bunch of them I THINK if the guy is not full of BS.

Find a low milage one and inspect it first, 99 D1 or older but not older then your 96.
