Angry 1999 D1 intermittent gear engagement

I have a 1999 D1 4.0 v8 auto. I just got this in a trade, the motor runs great and starts every time. The issue Is with the trans or TC. I don't believe the TC is fully engaging in any mode, 4Hi/Lo locked or unlocked. I can't get the disco to go into drive regularly. I can start the car and the put it in drive, it will begin moving, driving about 1 block, i will lose all power transmission to the wheels and can no longer move. If I shut the car off completely and restart it, I can shift to drive and it will move again. This repeats over and over, this is also applicable to reverse. I was able to get some lubrication to the TC shifter to get it freely moving left to right however, I still can not get it to the top left or right in the low positions. Any idea or experience with this issue?

Have you checked your transmission fluid level? This needs to be done in a specific sequence per the LR Manual.

I have checked the fluid, vehicle running on level ground, did I miss a step? I do plan on doing a full service of the filter and fluid. Was thinking more about it last night and wondering if I might have some torque converter issue.

Ive had this issue before...
1. first check TC fluids. tight little job but a 3-4 inch extension and you should be good if I recall.
2. put car in drive or reverse and roll forward or backward a couple of inches while pushing the Differential control to the bottom right (4H). You should feel it go into place. I would actually take this time to check all the gears and positions to make sure they are all working and moving freely.
If this doesn't work lmk, the TC in these is pretty rugged and should not be the culprit.

I did try moving the TC shifter while slowly rolling , no luck. I have not checked the fluid yet. I will check the fluid and report back.

Well unfortunately the transfer case is completely full and the fluid is in pretty good condition. Oddly , I moved the disco this weekend from a flat level surface to an inclined surface and after sitting overnight the transmission would engage in every gear over and over again. This leads me to believe the fluid is low in the transmission. I previously checked the trans fluid level and it indicated full. Any new ideas?

And, sandman is talking about the t-case fluid, not the transmission fluid, which takes Dexron ATF

Right, I must be missing something. The first line of my reply says the transfer case fluid is full.
