Default 1999 Land Rover Discovery SD….

Is anyone else on here the proud owner of a 99 Disco SD?
While serving in the US Army’s Berlin Brigade from 1977-1980, a Land Rover has been my “dream vehicle”. The very first one I had ever seen up close was being used by the British Army’s Queen Guard during a field exercise. A new one has never been considered. I wanted an older model. Well, I never ran across one that I liked until six months ago. Purchased from a police auction then parked since 2016. I had my work cut out. I’ve finally got most things wrong fixed. The 4.0 engine runs GREAT!! Four wheel drive works perfect! New fuel pump, battery, alternator, radiator and several replacement parts later I’m thinking it’s road ready. I’ve only driven the vehicle in a pasture at speeds never exceeding 30mph. I took it out on the road for the first time yesterday. I really liked the way it handled but the transmission shifted really rough. I changed the fluid but not the filter (old habit) before the test drive. I also had a dash light appear during the drive. Red and looked like a temp symbol. I don’t have any manuals so not sure what’s what?
Looking for some advice from another 99 Disco owner.
Thanks for reading and sorry for such a long post…

Nice find. Any D1 is worth saving from the crusher.

Welcome to the club. All the manuals you are likely to ever need are in the google drive linked in my signature.

If the light looked like a gear then yeah, engine oil temp could be the issue.

Get a OBD wifi dongle and an app and you will save yourself many hours of guessing.

Picked up my 99 SD a few years back, not running , I got it to run and drove it home. Then it quit and after a month or so of fixing wiring and replacing computers, alarm stuff, it has been reliable for the last year.. I am a sucker for the D1 style

I too am an owner of a 99’ SD in the same color as yours. Welcome. The folks here are helpful knowledgeable and polite.

EDIT: Pictures are always requested. If you don’t know what what warning light symbol, the red temp light you referenced, is lighting up take a picture of it and the conversation can start there.

D1 is the king of off-roading! And classic British styling!
