Default 3.9L backfiring through exhaust with loss of power while in gear

I recently tore apart my engine and had my heads cleaned. I put a brand new stiff timing chain and and gears along with all new top end seals, new thermostat, water pump and spark plugs. After I put it all back together and timed it, it seems to run ok until I put it into gear and the idle drops that's when it starts backfiring through the exhaust and has a tremendous loss of power. Anyone have any similar problems or any insight on what could be wrong?

I've played with the timing for last week and have even taken my front cover off and readjusted the timing chain a tooth and it made no difference. My brother thinks its has to be something on the outside like one of the bolt on's.

Have you checked and double checked you spark plug wiring and that it is correct? I know it sounds stupid simple but that's what it sounds like to me

I am guessing you mean you did the head gaskets and had heads checked plus did the timing set

Have you double checked for vacume leaks?

Have you checked the vacume advance on the distributor?

Have you rechecked firing order?

Is the distributed in correctly? Can be off a tooth

Injectors plugged in the correct order?

My d1 has no dist. so I can only give recommendations from previous exp. With other cars with ecm and dist.

Did you have the problem before the engine work? More then likely it will be something simple

I have not double checked to make sure the wires are correct but we numbered them all the way we took them off and put them on in the same order.

I don't have anymore of a vacuum leak then I did before, and I replaced my distributor about a year after having it and it only has about 5,000 miles on the distributor. I have not checked the vacuum advance although it was loose on the outside and I tightened it up.

I did not have the problem before having the heads cleaned and replacing the head gaskets, and timing chain and gears.

It seems like its not firing correctly because every time I pull a plug its always wet, so I ordered a new cap and rotor to see if that might help?

Start here the dist. May be off, dial the engine up on tdc cylinder 1 pop the cap make sure it is pointing at the plug wire for #1 cyl., go from there and be sure all the wires go where they are supposed to even though you # ed them. This may seem rudimentary and a waste of time but you need to start simple, plus the dist could be off a tooth

From there I would be sure injectors don't have plugs crossed

Then start , hook a vacume pump to the advance shoot timing light on marks and apply vacuum to see the timing mark advance

Is all the vacume routed correct? Hosses in good shape?

Like I said before I don't have a diet. On mine but I assume there is a reluctor / pickup in the dist. Check or clean it

Do you have codes?
O2 sensors hooked up?

Good MAF?

Backfire through exhaust makes me think 2 plug wires switched

Thanks for everyone's help. I figured out my problem was my car and rotor were the problem once I replaced them I haven't had a Problem since.
