LOSS OF OIL = LOSS OF ENGINE!
My '03 Series II lost oil pressure/flow (60K miles) headed out on vacation last Saturday. The dealer wants mucho $$$ to replace the motor. Any ideas on where I can seek out alternative sources of rebuilt engines?
Is this a common/known problem with these motors? Apparently, the motor is junk now and need to be completely rebuilt. Out of warranty, of course. Land Rover NA hasn't been helpful. I can't fathom paying $35K for a truck and have it blow up after 42 months of easy, well maintained suburban miles ...

Sorry to hear about your engine.
There are a number of places to buy used and rebuilt engines. I would suggest you chek withE-Bay, I have seen a nu,ber of them listed there, I would also check some of the classified section of some of the other Rovers forums.
I would suggest you start looking for a shop that will give you a good price on a rebuilt engine or labor to install an engine you supply.
By the way, this is not a common happening with Rovers, that doesn't make it any better though, I understand.

This is a common issue with your motor. Contact a lawyer. Well known manufacturing defect. Are you the original owner?

Bill, 03' DII's are prone to this type of oil pump failure. The cause is a manufacturing defect with the oil pump. There is a bulletin/alert which describes the issue. If original owner, you will get some help. Otherwise, SOL...
This problem is much more common than LR would like to admit. Just do a google search on "Land Rover Discovery Oil Pump Problems". You will get more information than you really wanted to know about this problem. Most notably, that LR knew about it in early 2003.
Here is the info sent by Land Rover to its dealers and technicians:
"TECHNICAL ALERT
March 14, 2003
TA03 1201
2003 Discovery Series II Oil Pump Failures
Vehicles Affected: Discovery Series II (LT) 3A771801 – 3A808362
Situation
Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a
manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting
assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing
which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure.
Resolution
Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range
the only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine
assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances.
Use the following components to affect a repair:
• LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV
• LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV"
Now, isn't that comforting? Note that it is NOT a recall but simply a technical alert that you may experience a DEAD engine. Good thing that Disco engines cost only a few pennies, right? Yeah, right!

XBlade, I saw your post before you removed it. It looks like I am experiencing the same problem and my Disco has 62K miles. I also know of another person who had the same problem at 78K. You are correct that your only saving grace is if it has an extended warranty. If not, you are screwed.
