Default 3001 oil filter won't fit; hits steering damper

At the advice of the forum wizards, I picked up a K&N larger capacity 3001 filter for my recent 1996 D1 oil change, but it seems to interfere with the steering damper.... I had to put the old Performax back on as I had already drained and filled the sump as per LR instructions...

Anyone else experienced this issue? Are there recs for a larger capacity filter that will still leave some room between the unit and the damper? Should I relocate the damper?

Thanks in advance!

It is. Wix, NAPA, & CarQuest are the same filter. All 3 even use a variation of the same part number. (Wix- 51515 NAPA- 1515 CQ- 85515) So, you can always find the same filter, even though you may not be able to find the same parts house.

I sold A LOT of Wix filters years ago working at O'Reilly's. Especially for commercial/agriculture equipment. But, I never sold any or heard a blip of feedback about K&N oil filters. They're air filters are literally useless.

ETA: I have heard/read a few places lately that K&N oil filters are made by SCAM, I mean, FRAM (Allied Signal).

This is solid info. I use RP filters in the Chevy, but I had heard a lot of talk about a larger volume filter helping out older lumps like my 150K mile 4.0... Thanks, just bought a Wix 51515 for $9, will install this weekend.

Wix, Donaldson, Baldwin are all top brands. Anything made by them is going to be quality. If you're curious about what filter to run, look at what the local guys running heavy equipment use.

So I got my Wix 51515 filter delivered today; it's exactly the same size as the K&N 3001... I'm wondering if my damper setup is non-stock for some reason or if I need to move the damper to run the larger filter?

Thanks!

Hard to tell, but seems like the bracket is not factory... PO installed a homemade looking skid plate- can anyone post a pic of what this is supposed to look like? A bit worried that the new oil is cleaning out my sludgy engine and all I have is a tiny and probably shot filter on...

Stock location is on the track rod behind the axle. Yours is aftermarket. Yours is also in the wrong place. Here's what I'm going to guess happened. PO installed that skidplate and realized the steering damper would not work in its standard relocated frame mount location. So he drilled two holes and moved the bracket back. Fixes the skidplate interference but now the damper interferes with a larger filter.

You have a HD drag link so ditch the skidplate. Its worthless and will bend the brackets when you hit something. Move the frame side damper mount back to its original relocated position. That should give you the clearance for your larger filter.
