As far as the shifter being a little stiff, it may need a good lube. If it was taken off road much in sloppy conditions (wet) it may be a bit corroded. Mine was horrendous. After tearing it down, removing the top portion of the shift mechanism, replacing worn parts and reassembling with a heavy coating of red Lucas tractor grease, it is really smooth now, it's been about over two years and still real smooth.

How extensive was the teardown? Do you have to lower the transfer case, or can you access everything from the top? That's something I may want to do in the near future.
