Hi All
Very new to the world of land rover, after giving crap for 25 odd years to all land rover owners, I have gone a bought one
and man am I going to get it ALL back
So far it seems to have the typical oil leaks, minor electrical "issues" and, it, seems, no rust.
Had it a week now and so far have
Converted it to HEI ignition, got hold of a chev HEI and machined the mounting shaft, and then bored Rover dizzy out and then shrink fitted it to the HEI, shortened the HEI tang about 12mm and redrilled for the drive gear, assembled fitted to motor and fired it up, runs nice and started better
Disconnected the A/C hose, (gas had already fallen out ) am now in the process of building a air tank so i have on board air for tires etc
next move is to fabricate bull bars for the front to take a winch and get them high to help with front approach angle
then side bars and rear bars
extractors, 2.5" exhaust system, flowmaster muffler.
then the biggy, am going to pull the rover diffs out completely and replace with 80 series land cruiser running gear, stronger, wider and I have a set, will be fitted with lockers front and rear, turning 33" tires on bead locked rims, then certification
then go cruising the country doing reasonably hard tracks with wife and kids.
Cheers
Pedro

With the exhaust system you're talking about, do you plan on cutting it after the headers right before the first muffler? I was thinking about taking out the first muffler by cutting it out right after the mounts and putting some larger diameter piping in there. Maybe just cut out both mufflers and put a flowmaster on the end like you're saying

Well i ripped into the new bullbar /winch mount,
so built a bit of kitset for bull bars, winch mounts to 6mm plate on the flat, all plates are 6mm to the chassis directly off the 6mm winch mount, the angle below the winch is 3mm corten steel with 3mm gussets between the 6mm and 3mm, should be strong as hell but relativly light

have managed to keep the winch well back, in fact half of it is in the grill

so from the front give good front clearance and approach angle, does not cut into the approach to badly

the uprights are going to get 30 x 3 flat bar wrapped over the towers, a horizontal bar between them, and the the outer section of the bar will be 40mm nb black pipe, with welded elbows for the tight corners, will be a pipe just below the headlight and a second coming from the bottom of the mount plate, and possibly a third small pipe to triangulate the corner, hopefully get it finished this weekend and start on the side bars

well, as the winch now goes thru the middle of the trans cooler i am moving the oil cooler back to where the air con sat, have also got another oil cooler and will run the engine oil thru the new cooler, removing it from the radiator, the trans is also coming out of the radiator to a air cooler, so pulled it all out rad, air cond etc, spun the water pump, hmm new one arrives tuesday, got new oil coolers fitted and plumbed up, had to modify some fittings to change to 1/2 hose, then degreased the engine bay and engine, bit more pleasant to work on.
also modded the air cond hose to fit to a non return valve for the air compressor. should have the front all back together except for rad, that can wait till the new water pump goes in,.

Finally got a alt belt 25mm longer to let me clear the HEI better, this enabled me to advance the hell out of it to just the point of detonation, and then backed of a couple degrees, and what a difference !!!! can almost make wheel spin
, cats are gone as well, even the wife noticed the difference.
HEI is well worth the effort
Bull bars are 3/4 built, center section in in with winch mounted, and just got to do the outerbars in pipe.
Transmission has got new filter and oil,
motor has new oil
rad has new fluid
waterpump is replaced,
looknig good
will post pics in next few days
