Default 95 Disco - 5 speed - Engine Choices?

Hi all,

I own a 95 Discover, with 168,000 miles. It leaks from everywhere, but still runs. Engine is starting to give me issues. It loses power / misfires while going up a hill. If I pull over and let it sit for a bit - it fires up and drives fine. Anyone have any ideas on what this might be?

I am seriously considering replacing the engine all together. I have read a lot on the 200 and 300 tdi. From what I can gather, the fact that my stock engine is a 5 speed is a good thing, if I were going to do a conversion.

What other engine choices (less expensive, but reliable) do I have for this rig? Gas, or Diesel? I love the 5 speed, and don't see many of them around, so really want to hang onto this beast, but I don't want to keep repairing small things on an old engine with high miles. Would rather replace the engine, and have a reliable (non leaking) vehicle I can drive on long trips, and cool 4x4 outings.

All thoughts are appreciated,

Muskrat

Could be the fuel pump. Maybe the ignition amplifier. I think I recall someone talking about the fuel injectors in the 3.9L failing and causing running problems. How are the basics? Fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, etc.

Your VSS (vehicle speed sensor)is going bad, thats why it is spitting and sputtering under load, eventually it will get so bad you cant drive it.
20 min DIY, $100 or so for the part.

Ahh... I saw something about this on another forum. They said something about the ECM thinking you had gone past the maximum speed.... 100MPH or something, and then shutting down 4 cylinders.

The fact it's an OBD1 vehicle also makes it a good candidate for a diesel. Isuzu 4BD1 3.9L diesels were fitted to some Defenders in Oz.
