Default 95 Disco starter hang up

I just picked this up, 1995 LR Disco, 156k
It was somewhat well maintained, P.O. took most of the maintance to LR dealer. Other stuff, mostly minor he did at this shop.
Anyways it had an ignition issue that was fixxed. Ive been trying to contact him on what was done and what the actual issue was. It may have returned.

So here it is. When starting it cranks and starts just fine, however, the starter hangs and continues to turn until the trans is removed from park. Then it disengages as normal, and you can return to park..

Any ideas?

Either sticky ignition switch or a bad starter.

Take out the ignition switch and get a new one. You can buy them as a complete set and with the likelyhood of the switch or the tumbler messing up and destroying the starter, then get a new one. Better then buying a few starters and used ignition switches until its fixed right the first time.

Yah but don't forget you have to either carry 2 keys or have all the locks re-keyed. But that's a small price to pay over replacing starters. Just my .2

Hmm, ok, I kinda see where this maybe heading.
What is it about hte switch though that could be causing the hang up, that gets interrupted when a gear is selected?
I just want to be sure?

The neautral safety will keep the starter from working in anything but park or neautral.

Those switches are quite expensive new. At least take the covers off and see if you can figure it out. Maybe a little contact cleaner spray would help or you could have a severely worn key as well.

I have even considered looking at doing a little mod and put in a momentary contact pushbuttom "Start Switch" like a lot of the new cars now have and a lot of the very early automobiles also had a separate start switch. The 50's Buicks had it built into the gas pedal, you kicked it down to the floor to start it up. Lots of early Chevy's had foot operated starter switches as well. New switches that match what's in there are big bucks my friend.

Im just having a tough time getting my head around a bad ign switch. Its not like it stays engaged, it seems more like the spur gear stays out. then for whatever reason returns to pre key on state when shifted into gear...
