Default 95 Discovery 191,XXX, should I by?

note: subject should say *BUY*
Guys,
Sorry for another 'I am on the fence' post (i see one already listed).

We are seriously considering a purchasing a 95 Disco. From what we can tell, it has mainly been highway miles and dealer maintained, down to every last oil change.

He is asking $2500.

We are not looking for an everyday drive car. It will be a camping, hunting, small amount of off roading. We started looking because we are doing the White Rim train (mountain biking with a sag) and don't want to tack a rental in. The four wheeling in there is NOT aggressive, and it seems this would be perfect.

It seems like a fair price (have not tried to negotiate at this point)...but we keep reading, and hearing from people to stay away from Rovers.

I guess what I am asking for here, is $2500 a fair price? (he did say there is a leak in the power steering, but he just would replace the fluid rather than get the pump fixed. Unless this guy is completely fooling us, it doesn't this car has ever been taken off road. (they mainly had it for the snow here in Colorado.

I know any truck/car we buy that is 15 y.o will be a risk, but is this a calculated risk/reward?

Anyway advice would be welcome.

If you can turn a wrench and read a manual and ask well thought out questions, then this is the rig for you. If you are not willing to put time, effort and money into it, then buy something else.

That being said, if you can get a copy of the maintenance record and if everything works, then it could be ideal for you.

Go for it!! But I bought a 95 D1 4 months ago, and I paid $500 for it with 176K on it. Runs good PS box leaks as well. I just add fluid as needed. A "little" rust here and there... Good Luck!

IF there is minimal rust and the maintenance has been kept up on it (beside them not replacing a leaky PS pump... that may indicate how they maintanied it!) then the "95 is a great model.

I'd have to assume that at 190k + the heads have been done and the water pump and fuel pump... stuff like that has been replaced??? Records would be nice.

I have a 95, and after a little work it has turned out to be a great vehicle. Go for it! There is tons of info here about em, and parts can easily be found online. I will say that most parts are not available at the local auto parts store, so be ready for some online ordering. Good Luck,

Dodger

Default Check the "Sticky"

Before you make a decision, i would check out the Sticky at the top of this forum for "Things to look for when buying a Discovery" as well as plan on completing every step in the "New to you service" in that sticky. If you are cool with all of that - then JUMP IN!

I love my '96 and find it to be dependable and reliable as long as you keep up with the maintenance. I also think it is relatively easy to work on.

Good Luck!

What groundandpound said, except get an ice cream or donut to help your brain decide what to do.

Thanks very much for your advice. I am the girlfriend, just searching for the Vehicle...

Thankfully my boyfriend is very mechanically inclined, but he is just super nervous about the unknown. He would feel more comfortable with an old (eg. 89/90 F150)...but we are looking to spend between $2000-$3000...and they trucks in that range are definitely OLD... below are a couple of pics the seller had sent me.

He listed it for $2500...not sure if we could negotiate or not. From what it sounds like rust is not an issue (we have not seen it in person yet)

Wow - it LOOKS great from those Pic's!!

I would still have him read the "things to look for" so you can look for them, and are able to ask specific questions to know if this has the things done to it. In addition to showing your boyfriend the things he would/should do after purchasing to ensure he is comfortable with completing them.

If all that "is a go" then I think it is the perfect vehicle for what you are wanting to do.
