Thanks.. yah I'd rather just get one off eBay for 100 bucks.. I'm thinking the automatic ECU from a 96 would work without issue in a 5 speed.. just worried about this immobilizer/alarm module now.

A pro squirt box is $1500 by the way, kinda prohibitive unless your going to slam it for autocross.......

Gotcha, the can's been replaced with some type of eliminator.. possibly the root of all evil? Was just googling really and thought i may have found a common component. I just ordered a fuel pressure tester so hopefully that'll give me some insight as well.

No doubt about the ECM's board though, it's not looking healthy and reading 40% at WOT it's not right. Now, the TPS will never read perfect zero or one hundred. They will have a start value that is low and the ECM will compensate for it and call it zero, same with WOT. K?

With the early GEMS trucks (96 till 97 1/2) you would want to snag the alarm module that goes with the ECM. They must be from the same vehicle. What will happen once you install the pair is the idle speed may or may not hit the ceiling. If it does the ECM will need to have it's variables reset. Hopefully you'll get lucky. What that means is - just like the TPS not reading perfect zero/one hundred all the other sensors that contribute to the motor twisting away will be approximates and they then fine tune to a steady state after several runs down the road.

Fuel pressure the quick and dirty method is hit the Schrader with a tire gauge just don't do it with a running motor, cycle the fuel pump a couple of times (with the key to pos III) to get it's max pressure up to the rail and then give-r-a-go. Fuel spray through the tire gauge aint cool......literally.

As for the auto/manual the ECM doesn't know or care. The autos are hydraulic and the manuals are manual.......

As for the OBDII scanner not working check the Data-Links fuse - Satellite Fuse Box 2, Fuse "F3" 10Amp. That is your power pin for the reader into the Magic Mirror GEMS world.

Thanks a lot for all of the info.. Really tough to find a cheap ERR6355 let alone one with a matching alarm module.. so I'll have to keep scouring. I've read some people get lucky and it just works and other spots where it says the dealer needs to sync it back up if you find one that knows anything about ancient rovers.. and then there's the work arounds where you lose central locks horn etc.. I'll check the fuse, maybe i won't need one after all

I was tempted to try the tire pressure gauge but I just ordered a cheap one off amazon so I'll check it out tmrw either way. Thanks again, very helpful..
