96 Discovery Diesel Upgrade???
First off it is full time four wheel drive not all wheel drive.
Second this horse has been beaten to death, made into dog food, eaten by a dog, then **** out into the yard and scooped up and put into a paper bag and set on a ex wife's front porch and set on fire and then stomped to put the fire out and the shoes that were used to put out the fire were then thrown into the trash.
Min cost is $5000 to do this mod, thats min.
That buys alot of gas.

Second of all: "Rudeness is an epidemic" this is a "Land Rover forum", intended for all Rover fans, owners, technicians, promoters "enthusiasts" therefore if you have nothing nice to say about my Rover or any other Rover for that matter - then keep your mouth shut! No one on this website needs to read your negative cocky remarks! If your going to reply to member posts then post something useful for all the Rover community!
PS: No wonder she's your ex-wife!
Would adding a 300TDI increase the torque though? Generally how are they on mpg? Anywhere near 25?
The reason Spike said what he said was that every newbie that comes on here asks the same question. Do a forum search for diesel and you will get all the questions you asked answered. There are hundreds of threads discussing different diesel options. You admitted you have a limited budget. Keep in mind you will have to ship a 300tdi from the other side of the pond as our British friends would say. Then you have to get it through customs. I'd you go with another brand diesel you will need all kinds of upgrades. You have to get custom mounts, a plate to mount to tranny, a way to mount a different tranny to the t-case (if you go with a different tranny), and an entirely new driveline to take the extra torque and HP. As was said you need 10k to do this. Might get out for between 5-7k if you go with a 300tdi. It might seem like you could do it cheaper but you can't. Many many disco owners have ventured into this territory only to find that those on here that say it can't be done are right. Good luck to you. Might be careful about attacking those who have put countless hours into helping newbies on here like Spike has. He has helped many people but it does get irritating sometimes to have people hop on here and ask a question that could be easily researched and answered simply by searching the forum.

I understand what you're saying: and yes perhaps I should have looked around the forum prior to making a new thread however. If I walked up to you or anyone for that matter ( a complete stranger mind you) and wanted on about how much of a piece of **** your vehicle was... What might you think or do? And if that same rude person was to advise you on vehicle repairs could you really trust his word after such insults? Such rudeness does not fix all the problems in the world nor does it bring Rover enthusiasts closer together! We live in tough times, money is tight and government and future are questionable. We have enough problems in the world as it is, might we return home each night from work, relax and enjoy afew hours on landroverforums.com in peace without some immature member speaking out his/her ***?! First impressions are important. There is no justification for that type of behavior, my 12 year old nephew is more presentable that Spike555!
Back to the topic at hand. I've did some research and gathered that neither 200 nor 300tdi, and not even an Isuzu diesel will add much increased torque to my Discovery. I can only wonder why anyone else would put one in their Rover. I'll look into Chevy engines and see what comes up.
Yes money is tight, so perhaps I will not complete a petrol to diesel conversion all at once, rather in segments. I'll start with getting the.diesel engine, then the mounts and other direct parts needed, then ill work on getting the transmission and all needed parts for that and finally ill see about getting it al installed. I guess only time will tell. In the mean time I'm going to ENJOY my **** box 96 Land Rover Discovery!!! She will be my everyday driver while my 98 50th edition Disco will be my backup offroad monster!
Thanks for the input. I'll do better to research prior to posting.

You can read here: Land Rover Tdi conversion engines about 300Tdi conversions. I found that from a Google search.
Slow down. Spike wasn't saying your vehicle was a POS, in fact he didn't say a word about your Rover. He said the topic of diesel conversions has been beaten to death, on nearly every forum even remotely related to Land Rovers.

Look around some of my posts, I posted a LOT of links around the web with other information. If I do the conversion, the om617 is what I'll most likely put in. But, I finally got my truck actually running after almost a year of messing with it so I'm going to enjoy it as it is for a bit first.
. My personal experience is every time I asked something I apologized for asking stupid questions
Then Spike told me to stop because no questions are stupid unless they ask
. Then I realized you guys are a bunch of old farts sitting around helping each other and love to bash each other with crude remarks talking about proper "insert positions", ex-wives, and my personal favorite the "What the **** are you talking about? The ABS is OUTA HERE!" conversations that come up every so often. All in all, I love this forum

Second of all: "Rudeness is an epidemic" .... if you have nothing nice to say about my Rover or any other Rover for that matter - then keep your mouth shut! No one on this website needs to read your negative cocky remarks! If your going to reply to member posts then post something useful for all the Rover community!

WEEEEEE... So yesterday I am by the pool, boiling up about 40 pounds of crabs and loving the taste of a few (low-estimate) Mojito's and somewhere else in the world (wide web) there is trouble.
Senior Shadow... I believe, if you re-read his post and your subsequent reaction you may find that "uncle" Spike never said anything negative about your vehicle. You sir seem like an educated and literate person which automatically lumbers you with a particular burden when interacting with a group of unknown "regulars" within a specialized internet forum. When entering this fray you should bear in mind that the writen (typed) word is easily misunderstood based on ones own perspective. Inject humor, sarcasm and metaphor and the translation becomes even more difficult. ( I do enjoy a good poop metaphor )
You entered an OPEN forum where individuals have been interacting with one another for, in some cases, years and asked for advice based on their experience and knowledge. In THIS forum we share info, tips and opinions and sometimes good humored jabs. As has been stated, there are certain topics which are VERY common and have been thoroughly reserched and debated. Spike, as you may come to know if you can stick around and ease up on the feelings of offense and defense, was in his funny way giving you an indication of experience and knowledge... topic has been...."beaten to death..." and is expensive in relation to benefit gained.
As for "cocky, negative, rudness" I believe your post script was a fine example of such... personal digs about family or "ex-wives" are something even your 12 year old nephew should know is out of bounds.
SO, stick around, have fun, learn, share BUT NEVER assume someone is directly attacking you based soley on your interpretation of their words. If you feel attacked then clarify these feelings OR just have a sense of levity and humor. They may have just been trying to be funny... 'cause everyone knows poop in a bag on fire is funny!
