97 Disco 1 Transmission/Power steering
hey guys,
I noticed a screeching noise the other day and also felt it in the steering wheel. I quickly noticed it was my power steering. Ive have a power steering leak which caused my power steering fluid level to drop below the minimum amount. I bought this car used about month and a half ago so I dont know what kind of transmission oil they are running.
I know for D1s power steering uses ATF but like I mentioned I don't know what ATF the previous owner used. Do you guys recommend performing a transmission flush or just fluid change? Should I also change the transmission filter or not? The color of my oil is brown but not a dark brown. I've read that performing a transmission flush will cause the transmission to slip? Also what kind of ATF do you guys recommend?

ATF for the PS & Transmission = same ATF Dex III. You should be able to do a fluid/filter change without any issue. Stay away from a transmission flush which flushes all the old ATF out.
PS wise you can open the bleeder on the PS box and try to flush out as much ATF as possible if you're that worried about it. I'd personally just top it off with Dex III and call it a day. If you still have a serious leak I would fix whatever is leaking box, hose, high pressure line, or pump.
