Default D1 and power steering fluid

Just replaced a ripped power steering hose so I was wondering what I should fill it back up with, ATF or Syn. power steering fluid?

Also, how many bottles should I buy? I want to try and have it up and running before I pick my wife up from school.

Di's take ATF in the power steering system NOT power steering fluid. You can buy full synthetic ATF.
Dexron III is what it takes.

All I could find around here is Dexon IV. Called the closest dealership and they should it would work fine, now to find out.

Yes it will work just fine. ATF is backwards compatible. Meaning Dexron 4 will work in a Dexron 1, 2 or 3 system.

why is it that they take ATF? (not questioning the validity of the answer.. just curious technically why)

I dont know why. But if you notice most imports use ATF in the power steering system. And it is usually the same ATF that is required for the transmission.
My wifes Volvo takes Mercon in the transmission, so does the power steering.
DII's take power steering fluid and DI's take ATF, I dont know why is the short answer.
