97 disco just died

Default 97 disco just died

I started the disco the other night put on the dome light and got out and scrapped the windshield, when I got back inside I turned out the dome light and the truck just died. I could tell right away the engine was getting no fuel, so I checked the fuse which seemed good , I put in another main pump relay still nothing and then replaced the sender unit still no pump came on, is there any other elcetrical relays under the passenger's side I could check I have driven this car pretty well 2.5 years trouble free , any advise would be great yhanks Peter

Try the fuel cut-off (inertia switch). Press the top, if nothing check it's connector, if connector good perform a continuity test. If good double check your connectors at the fuel pump and a short way up from that is another (it's a pigtail). Looking for melting plastic connectors. Give those dielectric grease after splitting apart. Ground wire (black) is the only other explanation at cargo door LH pillar about mid way up, ground lug.

What is making you think it is related to fuel delivery, and have you been able to check fuel pressure ?

All of the above - but throw a pressure gauge (tire gauge will work) on the fuel test valve on right side fuel rail. At ignition position 2 the pump should run for a couple of seconds, 32-34 PSI. If ya got fuel then check for spark. Test port is left of -Rover in pix, and inertia crash switch is just right of the washer fluid jug on the fire wall.

It's a Schrader Valve. Tire gauges can leak fuel, store fuel. Think that is safe?

Your are correct - throw the cheap tire gauge away after use. Safer than using a match stick to depress it and check for squirt. Many folks don't know what a schrader valve is plus they are more familiar with the tire valve description. And few, if any, of our new members have a tool set as expansive as yours.

No better way to educate than to call parts by their correct name. Over the years I've invested in good tools and so should members (at least the most basic like a $30 pressure gauge that has many, many uses) IF they are going to tackle their faults successfully. Free service so making them invest a dime for it is fair to me otherwise pay me the full price.

I think this member knows their truck fairly well to tell if the pump is on or not. I hear mine every time it turn the key...... so do others without sticking things in the Shrader to see if they have pressure. Could very well be a diesel, nobody even bothered to ask. Some call it a sender, some call it the lift pump.......LOL.

Have you ruled out the fuel pump itself being dead?

Mine died suddenly at about 70K (15 years). I determined it was likely the pump by lifting the carpet up from the cargo area, exposing the pump, and then having my wife try to start the truck while I gently tapped on its top with a rubber mallet. As long as I tapped, it would continue to run (sluggishly). I ordered a new one, replaced it (simple job) and all better.

thanks , yes there is no fuel ,yesterday I replaced the fuel sender unit and the wires with new connectors still no pump movement , I did check he inertia switch ,just unplugged it it was cleann then put it back on , is there a way to jump the switch to see if it is bad , it has a three wire plug not sure which ones to cross. .Today I will just power the pump to see that everything is right back there ,right now I pulled out my other 97 disco from SC very clean but the shifter (5speed) is tricky hard to go from 2nd to 3rd then to fourth often go to lower gear also slight grind when going from 1st to 2nd,it is not a gems model. at least I am not walking. thanks for any help

Check the pump relay on the passenger fender (black box about the size of a popsicle and sort of shaped like a wedge if it's pre AEL). Small coil contactor with points inside (there are two but only one coil is used at all). Points get pitted or crusted with carbon or the circuit board may have a popped trace or corrosion. You can pull the top off the box to check them. Chinese fire drill sorting out the electrical with pumps.

Sounds like the back-up truck needs a new clutch disc or fluid change. What type fluid is in it?
