Default '97 Disco SE keyless remote

I recently purchased my first Land Rover, a '97 Discovery SE. The previous owner didn't have the keyless remote, so I have been searching through eBay. Are these remotes easy to set up/program yourself, or do they require a trip to the dealer?

94-95 you can do yourself. 96 and up you need a computer.

If your remote just stopped working, there is a good chance that it's the remote that is broken, not the programming. Does it light up when you press the button?

Yes, the remote lights up. Bench test shows it is good too.

Some of the computers can program a used key, some cannot. Some require the full barcode attached to the key when new.

Like this.

I have a '98 Disco and replaced the batteries in the remote. I read somewhere to unlock the door with the key, open the door, and press the unlock button on the remote at least 4 times. I did that and after pressing the button several times, the lights on the rover flashed and the remote is working again.

Good luck,
Barbie

That is interesting to know. I quit using my remote because you had to press really hard on the unlock button to get it to work. Also when using the remote, I read somewhere that it goes into a higher level of security (Supersomething alarm) and that in this mode it will go into the disabled mode more easily if it doesa trigger and that people had encountered problems that stranded them. Don't know all the details but just don't want to run into such a problem. Maybe someone with more background can explain it.

I am satisfied to just use the key in the driver's door if I really need to lock the vehicle.

I don't think D1 has super lock. From the owners manual in Rave for the 2001 disco:

Superlocking (if enabled)
Superlocking provides greater security by
immobilising the interior door handles, thereby
preventing an intruder from gaining entry by
smashing a window and reaching inside the
vehicle to operate the door handles.
Provided all the doors are fully closed;
Superlocking is activated by pressing the
handset lock button twice within one second or
turning the door lock to the lock position with
the key twice within one second.
The direction indicator lights will flash three
times after superlocking has been activated and
once after superlocking has been de-activated.
WARNING
For safety, NEVER use Superlocking if
passengers are to remain inside the vehicle -
in an emergency they would not be able to
escape.
