Default 97 discovery

I am buying a 97 discovery land rover with a v8 the engine is too loud it almost sounds like a disel or like if it's lower on oil, but according to owner this is normal and it's always sounded like that because the big engine, is this normal on a land rover like this?

No, it is not normal, stay away from it.
Go find a better truck and then have a good Rover mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection prior to buying one.

No. If its making a loud knocking noise like a idling diesel or its low on oil its def not normal. Mine has a very very slight tick but other than the super loud fan it is dead quiet. And as far as V8s go the 4.0 in the Disco is pretty small.

Mike is on the money. There is no oil PSI guage, and the oil light does not come on until pressue is on the order of 7 PSI. Vehicle most likely has a great deal of wear on main bearings, and other internals. It is very close to being a parts horse. You can buy Discos under $1000 near me that "just need head gaskets", etc. Big engine? Compared to what? 4 liters is about 245 cubic inches, just barely bigger than the six cylinder in an old Dodge Dart, and no where close to the 454 "bbig engine" in my Suburban at the office. Walk away from this deal, but keep looking, there are good ones out there. You can use www.statewidelist.com to search all of craigs list for your state, sorted by city, to see whats nearby - within price range you specify.
