97 Discovery SD

I'm wanting to remove the black exterior molding located on the lower fenders and doors. I started to remove one of the small pieces on the passenger side fender. After pulling a third of the piece away from the fender I discovered a small square hole. The hole appears to be for a factory clip of some kind, maybe for a different trim level I'm not sure.

Anyone know if there are more holes or have any experience removing the exterior molding.
