My ex D1 did that.
They replaced: the VSS

and ALL 4 O2 sensors.
Was random but when it came up you felt like you will be stranded.

That fixed it!

GPRTECH, thank you for the bearing, I rebuilt it again today and replaced. The bearing fit perfectly as well. The washer I just put in about a month ago was in great shape. I did notice some junk up in the transfer case where the VSS came out of and tried to get out as much as I could. I will run the new bearing in there and test very soon and report back.

If the washer wasn't bad, you may have some other issue. It could be a problem in the reed switch itself, the speedometer assembly or even the Engine ECU, but I guess we'll see.

I really expected the washer to be eaten up.

Since I have been changing fluids and fuel filter, I have only driven it around the block and the speedometer worked just fine but I didn't get up over 50 MPH. Tomorrows the test. I also took contact spray cleaner and cleaned the connections really well.

The Rover Gods were with me today as the VSS went in without any problems. It took me nearly an hour last time.

I find my repairs only work if I make a blood sacrifice. You should see the number of cuts I have when I get done. :-)

The Rover Gods are playing a trick on me. This morning, thankfully before I got on the freeway, the Ultra Gauge said I was doing over 95 when I was doing about 55 and the cylinder shut down started. AAAAARGH!!

Reed Switch? whats that? and is that the next place
I should look?

Unfortunately, that's not a "user serviceable part".

It's in the area with the white silicone. I haven't dug into that yet and have no idea what it looks like. You could try a new or rebuild a different used VSS, but you're now past the point where there's any certainty what the problem might be.

It's also possible that the electronics in the speedometer is not operating correctly.

Possible problems are:
VSS
Speedometer
Engine ECU.

I wish I could be of more help.

You have been a bunch of help. I am going to ponder over this one for a few days. OH, there was a thin white washer in the front of the VSS that was pretty worn out. Is this significant to the operation of the VSS?? I also noticed the shaft was loosy goosy in the housing, otherwise, not a tight fight. It kinda wobbles.

The wear on the front washer is not important, it's just a shim. The shaft will wobble because it has no front support unless it's mounted on the transmission. My guess is that the reed switch (the actual sensor) has a problem.

Another VSS is the best bet.
