Allthough it might be a bit late now for the Original poster, I need to share our experience of a similar problem. Our Disco -96 also "hesitated" and jumping. We tried several things during a year until I got a hint from a post on the swedish land rover forum. This can be caused by a faulty throttle valve sensor (i think it's called in english). We simply replaced it and then the problem was gone. Difficult to find the sollution but easy to fix(and cheap too).

Well..... Today I drove about 30 highway miles. The disco kept sputtering and since I had bought a Ultra Gauge, I noticed it was saying I was going over 100MPH. My speedo did not change on the dash. So when I got to my destination, I unplugged the VSS and drove back the 30 highway miles and had ZERO issues. I guess my rebuild of the VSS didn't do so well. In less than a month, I was far worse off than before. I am thinking of just not replacing the dern thing at this point and using my I phone GPS for a speedometer.

What does the inside of the VSS look like? Did the nylon washer give out again? My guess is that it's so thin and the fact that the shaft has flast on it will make it wear quicker than I thought.

I rebuilt one of the units I had using a ball bearing from a hobby shop. It's unlikely to ever give out, but since my truck is not yet on the road, I haven't been able to test it. I can send you a ball bearing if you'd like to try it.

I didn't pull the VSS out today, just unplugged it. I used the same washer that was in your Tech Help. It fit snug in the groove for it. I did notice that when I was rebuilding the VSS there was another very thin white washer on the front side of the magnet as well. I didn't replace it, just put it back. It looked to be worn out but didn't quite know if this washer was as important as the back one.

The inside looked exactly like the one in your pictures, but after cleaning it all out looked good.

I'm betting that the new washer didn't hold up. I don't know what the material of the original was.

The ball bearing should outlast the rest of the VSS.

yeah my vss rebuild only lasted about a month my scan gauge would read 108-110mph while i was doing 65. When it would reach that range (108-110) it would start dropping cylinders which I have read is sort of like a speed governor. I unplugged it and it has been driving fine so i just ordered a new one. A little pricey at $96.00 but hopefully i will be able to put this problem behind me.

Source of $96 one? BTW, those who have met a good case of the Death Wobble would not be inclined to discover how unstable things might become at triple digit speeds.
