Default 98 Disco needs work. Looking for advice.

My wife and I have 98 Disco I with 126k miles. It was just diagnosed as needing the head gaskets done, steering box (slight leak), and tailpipe.
I received quotes that total around $3800. (Head Gasket job: $1900, Steering & Realignment:$1200, Tailpipe $800.) Do these seem to be reasonable for totals of parts and labor, tax, etc? Is it worth doing all this? We live in the Cincinnati, OH area. We haven't been too keen on our last mechanic. Recommendations for a new one are welcome. Should I be looking for someone that specializes in Rovers for the head gasket and steering jobs?
Thanks

Man that seems a bit high. What precisely is he fixing in the steering? Rovers definitely have Rover specific needs but overall the proceedure is pretty much like doing any other head gasket on a V8.

Id get some other quotes just to be sure

Oh and 800 should cover the entire exhaust!

Yeah, those prices are a few hundred high each. I'd definitely find a rover familiar mechanic as well.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. Other folks have told me this is a good, busy shop, and tend to be a little high, but they do good work, and offer a 3 yr warranty.

The original quote I had on the exhaust was Muffler/Pipe/Gasket/Supplies $600, and $144 for Labor.

Head gasket job was $300 for Head Gasket Set/Coolant/Supplies and a little over $1400 for the labor.

Steering Gear job is $600 for the Steering Gear/Supplies and $375 for labor and alignment.

However, I've contacted some people and will be getting quotes from some other mechanics as well. We really would like to keep this Rover and get it shaped up.

Thanks

just go to a local exhaust shop for that even at 744 that seems way high. I rebuilt my entire exhaust system for about 200 and that included new O2 sensors.

Where you you located? That kind of money i could come to you and do it! lol
