Any LR diesel will bolt right up, but you will still need to mount the intercooler, etc.
It a guy does all the work himself it can be done for pretty cheap, the engine is the biggest expense.
A used Isuzu engine can be had for cheap.

Spike what would be needed to bolt to the existing tranny/t-case? Is there already an adaptor to be had or would one need to be custom fabed. I have looked at this for awhile now and I can't seem to find one. The Isuzu engine would be perfect for one of these beasts and gets awesome mpg and you can get them dirt cheap. Like the box truck I found the other day. 650 bucks for the whole truck. 150,000 miles. No issues with the engine, just the truck is worn out. You can't beat that price. But you might end up pouring money into it to get everything to work so I don't know if it is actually a cheap option or not.

The problem with using a non LR engine is wiring, adapters and such.
It can be done but how cheaply I dont know.
You need a adapter for the trans, ECU, intercooler, room for the engine, maybe change fuel lines, exhaust...I talked to one guy and it cost him $10,000, that was with a brand new engine though.
Another did it for $5000.
I bet it could be done for $2500 if a guy did all the work himself.

For the gains to be had, I think 2500 is a steal. I think even at 5000 or just a little less it is still worth it. Especially when you look at the gains in HP, torque, and mpg. If I could afford to have the vehicle down for the time required to do the swap I would seriously look at doing it right away. Unfortunately she is my DD and so I can't do it right now, as I can't afford to buy another vehicle.

Unless I had a blown engine I wouldnt do it, it would take to long to pay for itself.
$2500 worth of diesel at the current price here ($2.85 per gal) is 877 gallons of fuel.
At a realistic 25 mpg average that is 35 tanks of fuel.
It would take over a year to pay for itself if you filled up every other week and thats not taking into account of fuel prices going up.
At $5000 it would take almost 3 years to pay for itself.
Not trying to be a buzzkill, but lets all think logically.
And you wont get any more HP with a diesel, you will most likely get less, more torques yes, better mpg yes, but not more horse power.
Unless you chip it and put in a bigger turbo but then you will need to upgrade the axles and diffs which increases your cost even more.

It is nice to dream though.

My thinking is that here in Texas high test is about 2.89 a gallon, diesel is about 2.60 +/-. I get 12 mpg and I fill up every 3 days (or sometimes every 2). The Isuzu diesel gets about 28-30 mpg. That is more than twice what I get now. Plus dropping in a diesel (of course gotta make sure it is in decent shape and around 155,000 miles or less) significantly increases the life of my truck. I am at 155,000 miles right now. Run that up to about 200, then do the swap, keep driving the truck until about 300,000 on the diesel and I would say I got my money out of both engines and I would be a happy man. That's just my way of thinking though. It has been pretty hot here so maybe you can chalk it up to a heat stroke Spike. LOL.

I am not against it so dont get me wrong.
I am just looking at it dollars and cents wise.
My truck has almost 195k on it and she runs as well as the day I bought her (better actually) so when she does let loose I will then decide what to do, most likely I will just have the engine rebuilt.
And as for your fuel prices...you can suck it.

$2.75
$2.85
$2.95 and that is after it came down today.

Paid $3.04 for the wifes car the other day.
I average 15 mpg with the truck as a daily driver and I can go 2 weeks on one tank, but I top off once a week just to avoid sticker shock.

LMAO again Spike. That's twice today you got me laughing. On a more serious note I drive mine alot and the price per tank is not to bad. And if I was only filling up once or twice a week it probably wouldn't be to bad, but every 2-3 days is starting to kill me. After a tune-up I am still only getting 12 mpg average right now. Hopefully I can afford to get those new O2's I have been wanting (and needing) for awhile now pretty soon. That ought to help alot. Still.......ouch! everytime I fill up. But I love her to much to ditch her for something with better mileage.

Very true. I can usually only get 93 octane and it is usually 10% ethanol. Gotta save the environment with my 12 mpg gas guzzler. Don't get me wrong, I love the outdoors and I am an avid hiker. I clean up after myself and others when outdoors, but there is a big difference between respecting the environment and going overboard and causing everyone huge inconveniences. You know what I mean. (Step down from soapbox, rant over. lol)
