Default ABS sensor mess

Hi All, I have a 98 Disco with 187000 mls.
I recently prised out one of the front wheel ABS sensors to replace it and it was covered with what looks like old wheel bearing grease.
Is there a way for that to happen?
Also what can I safely clean out the sensor hole with? (WD40 etc....) what kind of brush can I use without damaging the insides?
Thanks in advance
Alan

That is totally normal. The abs sensor rides/reads on a toothed ring that is part of the cv joint, which is bathed in a oil/oil-grease mix. Also known as the swivel housing lube. You could wipe off the sensor beffore re-installing, but it will get coated again on the first drive.

Just remember anything you spray into that hole will go into your CV joint. Cleaners will break down the grase/oil that is in there and cause it to wear prematurely. Carefully stuff a clean rag into the hole and clean around that if you need to. also you will need to drive it to "set" the sensor. You may get an anti-lock light but I have attached a method to clear that. Its simple and quick and you won't need the dealer to hook up test-book at $120 bucks an hour to clear the light.

That makes perfect sense, thank you so much. I am much relieved

Thanks so much, I have used the blink method before and it works great. I will do that again.

Default ABS code reading

I have 2 copies of the ABS blink code reading method that are slightly different. One mentions "first removing the ABS warning light relay from the group of relays underneath the seat" the other doesn't mention this step. Do I need to remove the relay or not? Also for others to know, I finally found the relay behind the front right fascia not under the seat.
Cheers
Alan

I think removing the relay under the seat is for 95 and some early 96 models. I don't remove the relay on mine and it is a 96 so I imagine you 98 may be the same. There is a thread on here about removing that relay I just haven't looked for it.
